I hear the kids are very well behaved. They should be no problem.

The government deciding you are a convenient pawn to use in the game of politics and arresting you on fabricated charges of espionage is probably the more relevant issue to consider.

Some never really retire, I know many on PC who gave away their day job but continued to dabble in property or started a small business.

Its going to be interesting this year for me as I complete my small development (3 villas) in December. I am using cash and the stress test will be if I can refinance this project.

The values will be fine, plenty of fat here, however the significant changes to servicing debt may be the stumbling block. I am hopeful

I can sort of retire now but because of having young kids, I can't exactly pack up with the mrs and go globe trotting. Haven't figured that part out (yet). Current plan is to provide a stable household until they're maybe early high school, then we execute early retirement plans properly. E.g. go overseas months at a time, caravan around Australia etc. At the moment we can only go for a few weeks, several vacations per year, while wfh with chill part time jobs and take things easy. 'coast fire' as they call it. Currently mid 30s.

IMHO its more imperative to have that stability when they're in high school..so if you were going to trek around Oz etc, best to do it before they start school or earlier in their schooling years.

There are many ways to retire early if you get creative even without huge asset base. Eg
Student boarders in east of melb pay around 400pw, 2 of these would help.
Live in a cheap country most of the year eg thailand. 40k per year and live like a king while rent out ppor
Im a kiwi in Aus. Nz still has non means tested pemsion, 30k a year for a couple. If i return to get it, reckons thats round 700k less i need to have in assets to draw an income from.
Just some thoughts, many ways to get there.

To me retirement is living on my own terms regardless of age, have achieved that 25 years ago.
I think many need to consider what to retire to?
I will continue living and doing what I have been doing for the last 25 years or so.

'I spent a lot of money on booze, birds, and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.' George Best (footballer)

    Sage advice.

Update on this. In consultation with my wife later last year of the “WTF are you gonna do 5 days a week?” variety and taking on board parts of her counsel on her part-time experience I decided rather than retiring cold turkey I would change my role to 3 days a week (Mon-Wed) and see how it goes, change focus to strategic initiatives...no more direct reports, no P&L responsibility, no dealing with clients. Was a strange experience handing over the reigns in January, essentially writing myself out of a job that many would kill for.

I can report after my first week as a part timer that it is pretty bloody good! The 4 day weekend is something else. I can definitely see myself doing this for a while, at least as long as I am still invested in the business.

I’ll report back after an extended period of permanent part-time as to the experience.

I think the 2nd part is what many would kill for...
