Who at the lurkers that stop on by for a look but don't sign up? Anyone aware of any regulars and what they come for?

Old mate Benny Kingsley stopped by buy never returned

There must be a few mag writers aware and dropping by, one is in for a chat. And I believe others pm people.

I know of a writer who stops by for info but has no interest in investing himself.
And also a mate who is keen on investing but still at member level "lurker"

I know lots of lurkers who are not interested in conversations but look to gather information.

You don't learn as much being a lurker, because you can't ask your OWN questions. But how many lurkers do you think there are as compared to the 3,365 current members?

Absolutely, and it helps you check your learning and hypothesis. For example, if I thought it was a good idea, and therefore suggested, that we should all go and purchase one bedroom OTP units in Melbourne CBD I would learn quickly that it was a bad idea as the other members would be howl me down.

If I write that x-coll is a good idea, I will be told otherwise.

If you miss the point of your reading as a lurker you may never know, as know one will correct you. This could be expensive.

Also, you learn more when you do more than read, but actually do something with the information.

These are pretty much the only reasons why I'm not a lurker + it's anonymous.

Some lurkers also show up at the Wentworthville meetings. I've chatted to a few. Some are quite experienced investors and developers. A few tyre-kickers as well - not necessarily inexperienced, just introverts when it comes to Internet forums.

I've had a lot of new clients find my details here but have never posted on the forum.

I do the same on some other forums - read the threads but have never posted.

    Cheers

Yep, 2-3 this last week who got my email address or number from forums but have 0 or 1 post to their name. I'm ok with that :)

I tried lurking for a while when I first joined Somersoft, but found I learn best my participating in discussion.

As with most internet forums, there are also a quite a few that take (information from postings by others) and give nothing back (contributions made by themselves) despite being able to contribute.
I call this the salesman syndrome - where they take as much as they can, from as many people as they can, and only give back if there is something in it for them.

There is a lot of up too date information in this site on several different levels of investing, and the more information you have the more you may become confident in the outcome ,or more crisis hunters start posting..

Good to know the business details are paying off.

The natural progression would be to lurke then when you have something to add of value and feel this place could be for you,you jump in.

I can't recall my lurking period but it was on and off for a few years then became a more regular lurker, then when I felt I had something sensible to say or knew something I joined in

We get over 22,000 unique visitors a month to this site ... the number of registered users is a very small percentage of the total number of eyeballs on this site.

Still very small compared to the number of unique visitors on Somersoft though (almost all search engine traffic these days).

Same here. I lurked on SS for many years, then got a login, but still didn't contribute much in the way of content. I generally felt others knew better than me (esp. anybody with 1000's of posts) and could answer questions better. Then I posted a few questions and then got very into SS. Now with the new forum and a few more years experience investing I feel a lot more confident on quite a few things so now I don't hesitate to post.

There are still plenty of property investment topics I don't know much about, but that's ok. There are experts I know who are on here to help and I can always check if the question has been posted before, and read and learn and hope to gain some insight. And if not... I can always start a thread or ask a PM. :)

@charlie01 - the prudent man will always get two alternatives, the wise man will know which is the better option.

    Same.

If someone is looking for a particular topic and it comes up here they may get the answer they were seeking. Zero harm in that.
