After returning to Oz I discovered the government has passed laws that make Australia one of the most snooped on locations in the world. Mandatory data retention forces ISPs to keep everyone’s web browsing histories and metadata for two whole years and it's possible for the police and many other agencies to access those files without a specific warrant.

Unfortunately Australia suffers from corruption at the hands of the police so I'd like to get a VPN to protect myself because it seems to be the best form of personal cybersecurity available which stops ISPs from collecting data for the government. So which VPN are you using?

None. I wear an alfoil jacket instead. They can get my computer but never my heart.

I think you meant to say alfoil tinhat can get your computer but never your heart; but you can't deny objective, undisputable facts from reality. Conductive material blocks out EM waves if it's packed tightly enough and fully enclosing. It would act as a Faraday Cage and since WiFi, phone calls, etc. rely on radio waves (which are electromagnetic) the foil probably would be able to block out a huge amount of the signals. You should get matching pants.

I don't use a VPN, never have and really don't see the need for it. All my data is through an encrypted method (ie private tracker) so no one can see what it is even if they sniff the packets, the only other stuff that people would see would be what pages I visit, there is nothing questionable in my browser history to worry about.

I use ExpressVPN. It's actually really fast.
With no VPN I get 28mbps (capped on my NBN plan), with ExpressVPN connected, its 22mbps.

When the yearly Express subscription ended, I tried NordVPN, fastest speed I got was 14mbps. My brother also had issues installing the client on his PC, so we cancelled the contact (30 day money back guarantee).

Then tried Private Internet Access and got 16mbps. Again, cancelled during the 30 days.

Went back to ExpressVPN. Its by the far most expensive, but its also the fastest (that I've used). I also like the fact that if VPN disconnects for whatever reason, it locks down your internet network connection completely until it reconnects so that nothing leaks. Nord offers something similar, but its application based and needs to be setup.

Have previously also used VyprVPN, but despite them saying they are a 'no log' VPN, they DO log. Avoid VyprVPN.

I've just started on ExpressVPN for Netflix but after just one day, Netflix tightened down and doesn't let me in from any server anywhere (even Australia).

When I had Netflix, they tightened down on a regular basis. Express generally got around it within a few hours (max a few days). I ended up getting rid of Netflix - I'll get it again when they allow the same content as the US without circumvention.

If ExpressVPN isnt working at the moment for Netflix, you'll find most other products out there offering the same thing don't either. Until they change their settings to again make it work.

You could always try a free smart DNS service in the mean time, see if that works?
    American Netflix

Prior to using VPN, I used a similar one. But Express will update their systems to get it working again..

make sure you don't purchase a VPN using your bank account. defeats the purpose if you do.

Does it really matter if payment for a VPN can be traced?

It makes no difference if they don't log usage.

Just need to get invited to private trackers, the data is encrypted as opposed to public trackers where the database is freely accessible to anyone :)
