    Hi All
I'm approaching 55 so still a fair way from retirement ( on my income ) but would like to travel to find somewhere to retire hopefully in 5 - 10 years time.
I live in Victoria but am looking towards the East Coast of NSW. I don't like the weather too hot but couldn't retire in Vic. as it gets bloody cold for too many weeks of the year.
I'm open to discussion of Southern WA or SA
I'm looking to be right on the beach preferably near a town centre that has Medical facilities, pub , coffee shop etc. Somewhere that may not have been "discovered" yet.
Originally the wife and I looked towards Coffs Harbour for the weather so that gives you a bit of an idea on how hot we like it.
Hopefully you guys can come up with some interesting places we can look at

    Cheers

I love southern WA , spent most of my childhood traveling down there. What places were you thinking about in SA?

I think retiring somewhere else can be a bit of a misnomer really - you still need access to your friends and family network. Plus you've gotten used to people from your clubs/groups, medical professionals, etc

Just a suggestion but why don't you do some climatic research into areas you are interested in. I don't see a whole lot of difference between where you are now and the South Coast of NSW. Both can be quite cold over the winter months, especially ocean temperatures. If you intend to dip your toes in the water in your latter years this is something you need to seriously consider!

Why do you have to move permanently. Can't you just go travelling for 2-3 months when it's very cold? Nowadays even overseas travel (South East Asia) can be done on a tight budget.

    Cheers,

Yeah, good luck with that o_O.

Maybe consider Port Macquarie - great weather, beaches and food. Good medical facilities and not too far to the big smoke in Sydney if you need to see specialist/s.

I'd suggest for you to go a little North from there. Sunshine State welcomes you:)

I love SW WA too, BUT I like the cold. Winter can be literally freezing and the weather warnings often come with Graziers warning regarding loss of sheep due to wet, cold, windy weather.

I hear good things about Port Hedland though... Wait, no that was Port Macquarie...

I have good friends who live in Port and have done so for many, many years. They now refer to it as a northern suburb of Sydney! Too busy, too many roundabouts, too many people. New estates everywhere..... not the same old Port anymore!

As a semi-retiree that has done the interstate move, here are a few of the criteria we considered to narrow down location:

Access to amenity (Healthcare, Retail, Entertainment etc.) - up to short drive
    Access to rail - walking
Access to International Airport - up to 1.5 hrs
Property size - minimum 1/2 Acre
Property outlook - rural ($$$ more on this later)
Access to Beaches - up to 45 mins
Age of property - up to 10 yrs
    Broadband services
    Extended family locations

There were a few more personal criteria but those really narrowed our search for a mix of personal lifestyle reasons that resulted in SE QLD for us.

Ok, now some of the why....

$$$ - cost of living was a very important consideration as controlling this has allowed us to forgo full time employment entirely, in our 40’s. Our criteria ensured our PPOR didn’t swallow unnecessary capital & that our ongoing costs were really low... this is an option when location is not employment driven.

Rural location - for this was about 2 things. Daily enjoyment & cost of living.
Rates for Rural Resi zoning can be far lower for those willing to have rain water & septic system. We wanted both for lifestyle, sustainability & self sufficiency reasons.

Location (train/air) - as we have more time now, close access to rail & air hubs has been great for us. Whilst working, most consider this in terms of commuting, but once no longer doing the 9-5, close access is for entertainment, socialising & travel.

So, now we have space to enjoy ourselves at home (as we have heaps more time to enjoy it these days), good access to the things that matter to us and a controlled cost of living that has liberated us from the rat race far earlier than most.... :)

IMHO, to plan for retirement you really really need to think as if you are already retired, rather than as a wage slave doing the daily grind. This can be hard to do, so we made a list of criteria which I than graded as essential or preferable with a weighting order. This really helped us narrow from everywhere to right here.

    Good luck!

Moved from Canberra to the South Coast of NSW. Then, after my wife died, moved back to Canberra.

Proximity to facilities, ease of transport requirements (walking to shops, theater, movies, etc) plus access to health care was my thought process. Dumb governments wherever you live in this country and for NSW anything the other side of Macquaie Street doesn't exist.

Nice process. Where in SEQ did you end up Indifference?

We are in Brissy but looking at the Sunshine Coast for retirement.
