Hubby "retired" nearly six years ago, aged 50. He did go back to help out a mate and worked nine months (meant to be three) and another three months, so in six years he has worked a year as a favour. I think he enjoyed that work without feeling trapped. Five years ago, I went back to casual work after having been a SAHM because I was feeling a bit lost with kids almost grown and I enjoy my little job. I can work as little or as much as I like.

It is a tricky thing to suddenly lose "my house" but we've worked it out quite well. We can do what we want, when we want. Hubby keeps busy helping friends, doing things on our IPs and just mucking about in the garage.

We are fairly simple, and there is nothing we want that we cannot do or have. We may travel some more, but neither of us is desperate to travel. Life is pretty good.

I voted 5. But when I say retire I really mean leave my corporate career and then do something I am passionate about. Something linked to property would be great.

I'll retire when my business stops making me stacks of money. Because of the net I've expected that my business would be unprofitable years ago. It seems there are lots of suckers (retailers) who keep buying my products when they could get them cheaper on the net.

Hubby retired nearly 2 years ago but he's been doing a bit of casual work this year.
3 weeks to go to retirement for me.

We aim to be travelling A LOT.

We may do some part time work down the track.

    Ask @Bayview - he's the retyrement expert.

As for when I'll retire - what time is it now?

The poll results surprise me a little

The question was - When do you want to retire?
Apart from those already retired, less than 10% want to do it within the next 5 years.
Everybody must genuinely enjoy what they're currently doing.
Now if the question was - When do you think you will/can retire, the poll results would seem more understandable.

Whats the hurry? Especially when you have a family I can't see what doing whatever I want whenever I want would do for me at this stage of life.

I'm currently in my fifth week of maternity leave - toddler and now a three week old at home - I'm jealous of my husband going to work each day. Keep looking at seek for jobs. I don't think I could handle retirement anytime soon.

I'd like to retire Friday after next - but I think it will be in about three to five years time instead.

I'm deaf dumb and blind? not one of those people have written in this thread. Whose to say they were the ones who've ticked it? There was no malice in what I wrote, I was just curious to hear from those who have retired as the whole thread as the people who are contributing to THIS thread have all been those who have not yet retired.
Please re-read my post, have another drink and realise that I was just asking for more information and nothing else.

I hear you! I remember that stage - being home with kids IS working. I returned to work when my youngest was 15 months and got the comments "How do you do it?" and I always replied that it was just as busy working as being home.

I answered "When do you think you will/can retire" and said 10 years because 20 was too far away. More realistically it will be 15. When do I want to retire? I don't know...not yet. My job is a challenge and I'm learning things each day. I think it will be time to retire when I stop being challenged or when I get complacent.
