Purchased my first car at 15

$50 cash sale and the fact it was registered made it a bonus, luckily we lived on acreage with a dirt road. A short sprint across that road took me into the sand hills and hidden valleys, we knocked the fins off a surfboard, put some silastic around the distributor cap and with the modified surfboard and a long rope started skurfing

I cut up an old steel sign, shaped and fixed it to the base of a sandboard and tow my kids along the beach. Fun day out. Keep intending to make up a sled from an old bonnet.

Holden rodeo, ex work ute from my old man's company with about 300,00kms on the clock. It had many great features, the best was that it used to change lanes by itself

1974 LH Torana. Stripped it, and built it back up after a respray. Paid $900, probably spent $3000 on it. Never really put enough effort into it being any good.

That was about 20 years ago. My latest purchase is a 1974 Mercedes 250 for $5000. Whole different ball game when you can pay someone else to work on it.

(Actually - first car I ever owned - I was given a Ferrari for my 15th birthday, but it only occurred to me recently that this was an asset hide, which ultimately didn't work and I lost it).

Actual first car was sold to me as spare sparts only :)

a 64 1200cc 38 hp beetle................ 200 bucks with 2 weeks rego. Take it to the servo - fill up the oil and check the petrol :)

But my REAL first car was my much loved 1970 Esky Panel Van for 500 dollars, that Kent engined monster was good for 160 kmh down a cliff.

I remember a line from the show "Minder".

Somebody is about to buy a lemon, and Terry advises him.

"Your first car is like your first girl. You'll always remember it. Get a good one".

I learnt the 'never sell' rule through various cars!
First car was a Datsun 240Z 15 years ago. Bought for $7k, sold for $9 2 years later, would be worth $30k+ today.

Found this on youtube, history of Australian car manufacturing with interviews from those involved from the early stages.
Thought others may find it interesting.

Of the Torana? From memory a 173, or maybe 186.

The dreams of a 350 chev were never realized

My first car was a 1968 Torana. It was my nanna's and she passed away leaving it to my mum (and me).

During winter I had to keep it on idle for 15 minutes before driving or it would stall at every corner.

My brother now has it in a shed at yerecoin. It still goes but is not registered (sadly).

You don't even want to know what they go for, big money... Dad has a genuine LH SLR 5000 in the build at the moment, should be mint when it's finally done.

lol....ain't that the truth, but what is worse is when someone in the know bought one thinking they knew better, anyway, was not me, but that person did not beat the Camira

PS I am not sure a Camira beats a Lada, we have one in the family that has not moved an inch in more than 15 years, even the chooks and dogs wont be seen in it :D

1978 Mini Clubman GT replica. Paid $4,500 in 1996

Sway bars coupled with tires so fat you couldn't slide it, come into a corner too hard and it just lifted one wheel off the ground.

Engine worked as far as an 1100 could be worked, more power needed either forced induction or an upgrade to a 1275.

The sound was loud and meaty, a very lumpy (25/54) cam and 2.5" CES with a Hotdog muffler meant many people asked me if I was running a rotary from the way it sounded :).

In reality it was probably a death trap but to me it was a beast :).

I sold it 5 years later for $5K to a mate. He stuck it in his garage and left it to rot :(.
