    Looking for ideas :

Need to get an engineers report to see if this pillar is load bearing if its to be removed

    1) Remove everything the problem is the main bedroom door opens straight into the bigger lounge.
    2) Leave pillar remove planter box and drop the walls to waist height render exposed brick.

There are 3 beams, the one above your pillar, the ridge beam (center and highest) and a third beam on the opposite side of the room.
Is the third beam the same size as the first ?
Does the third beam have a similar span between supports ?
If the third beam spans the entire room/same length without the pillar then your pillar is likely only ornamental (based on a pitched roof without some other form of second storey construction above).

Render over it and make it a proper column.

Add another and you will get:

And once you've drunk it all in, you won't give a damn what they may look like or even if they are actually there.

That plan doesn't give the load bearing details..
A simple way would be remove the wall, take the front section of face bricks out and install a woodburner fireplace in that section ,but I'm not a engineer and not qualified to advise, but a fire place would fit straight into that space and just run the extraction flu straight up in line with the pillar..imho...

    a Wi-Fi router on the top for a start , ( wink )

i would be tempted to say let the vine grow up it , but that might be problems later , how about a fake vine ??

am not sure art ( hanging on it ) would work because it would put extra focus on it

add render ( maybe to the wall as well ) and decorate it in a 'classical style ' ??

i am guessing it is a structural pillar ( holds something up )

yes a decorators quandary , no doubt

At a wild guess, it's an under purlin, you could replace it with a whopping great I beam or use a skyhook on the outside of the building.

I was thinking of a small hot tub in the planter space.
