I am biased of course, but the facts do the talking....

Bad weather, Ugly beaches. Still, Aussies are flocking to Melbourne

    Extract from Finance Yahoo

Melbourne, which served as Australia’s political capital and financial center from federation through to the mid-1920s, is undergoing a renaissance. Its population is forecast to overtake Sydney’s in the decades ahead now that the former rustbelt region has reinvented itself as a hub for education and high tech — attracting firms such as Geli, a software maker that chose the city for its first office outside the U.S.

Many people don't mind the weather and the beach, and some of my friends like it as it has more european vibe.

I still love Sydney better though ... for now :)

Having lived in both, my two cents - "bad weather" is the key here.

Melbourne has bad weather. So everyone spends more time inside. So I believe people passionately pursue their indoor interests - art, music, food, cultural things, you name it.

Sydney has great weather, beaches, outdoor life. But if you spend all your time doing that, you don't have time for those other interests. So for me personally, outside of work I found life there far more boring and not very stimulating.

disclaimer - i grew up in a colder part of the world, which was very music and artistic focused, so that's my bias.

However I will also say that pace of life in Melbourne seems a fair bit slower. Maybe it's the better transport. Having lived here about 6 years now, I think that's changing too unfortunately. Maybe too many people moving here!

Also, I'm soon to move overseas for a decent stint, so we will see how it all changes when im back!

Having lived in both areas as well, I am liking Melbourne more than Sydney. Regarding the bad weather, if you focus more on the climate than the weather, your perception of Melbourne will change a bit.

Yeah ugly beaches - maybe, but don't have to go far to find the birthplace of Rip Curl.

Last year when I went to Melbourne in June, it was freezing cold. The wind chill was very strong .....

However it all got compensated when I found an excellent Yum Cha place called Secret Kitchen at Doncaster.

Hehe! I love it and visit as much as I can (only a few short trips a year atm, sadly, although I try to plan at least one or two trips during winter ❄️). I plan on spending a lot more time there as soon as possible. Each to their own, I guess!

Both of our kids live in Melbourne. So we try to get to Melbourne 4 to 6 times a year, preferably NOT in winter.

My daughter married a Geelong supporter and he converted her to the Cats.

I suppose it could have been worse. She could have met and married a Collingwood supporter. Then I would have a son-in-law with two heads :).
