Ineffective bosses are usually those with good technical skills but poor people skills. They get promoted and don't adapt to focus more on managing people, end up micro managing, not trusting their juniors. And they're oblivious as to why their team's churn is multitudes higher than other teams in the business.

I'm interviewing someone tomorrow for a position here. I'm probably more anxious about it than she is.

Kind of. I'm not really worried about the ability to remunerate appropriately. I'm more concerned about the ability to provide longer term stimulation and growth.

It's a very small business and whilst I do hope to employ more people over time and that would mean those in early would at the top of the ladder, there really isn't a corporate ladder to climb. The job needs someone highly intelligent and motivated, but that may also be the sort of person who wants to move on just when they're becoming really valuable in the future.

I also don't have much experience in interviewing people in this manner.

Depends on the kind of person you're interviewing. Sometimes even the highly skilled ones like to stay within a role where they can simply settle and do what they're really good at. Having no corporate ladder is a good thing in my view. If you can provide the remuneration and she's that valuable, there might be way to shape the role to fit what she wants in the future. Good money, great people (I assume you're good to work with!), opportunity to grow --> hard to move out from

Everybody works more effectively with somebody looking over their shoulder.

That's what I tell my boss when he does it to me.

    He gets the point, reluctantly.
