Maybe I have been living in Sydney for too long but our second bedroom is 2m x 4m (used to be called a sun room) and to me this size is actually okay- we have a double bed in there which can go either way (admittedly only against a wall with a bedside table on only one side...) and a reasonably sized desk and it doesn't seem too cramped.

My bedroom as a child , had about two foot of clearance down the side of the bed and I couldn't open the door fully as it hit the end of the bed , I reckon it was 1.5 m * 1.8 m .

Not quite the monty python shoe box , but it was pretty compact ...

We're splitting one room into two and the narrow one at 2.4 , but over 5 long , should be fine . Under two is compact .
