    Hey guys,

We moved into our new house a year ago and really enjoyed the place. However there is an apartment building next to us and every week we hear loud noises coming out from their building, along with smokes coming out from their chimney. It gets unbearable when we sometimes stayed at the courtyard.

    Chimney

We’re wondering what machine is this connected to and why is it making so much noise? Obviously it’s not a fireplace haha, we’re wondering if it’s for basement ventilation or not. But if that’s the case, wouldn’t the machine be running 24/7 instead of only occasionally?

Is there anything we can do about that noise? Like approaching the council or should we just ask their strata manager directly? Are there also any guidelines or requirements on how often the machine can run, and the maximum noise it can exert to the neighbouring area?

Sincerely appreciate any help on this!

    Looks like aircon? Bathroom/Kitchen exhaust?

Start small and escalate as necessary.
So I would communicate with their strata committee and find out what it is used for - odd that smoke comes out of it - I would expect its a mechanical ventilation system for basement levels but that doesn't normally have smoke. By any chance does the building next door have commercial tenancies on the ground floor and any of them is a restaurant/cafe? If they do then it could be their exhaust flued up to the top
Once you know what it is then you can work out what your options are.
But yes generally they are governed by sound limits and can be reported to council for it to be tested to see if it exceeds the decibels prescribed.

People often use "smoke" and "steam" interchangeably....

Likely to be the commercial range-hood when they fire up the grill/stove, "smoke" came out. Does it smell good too? If yes, probably it's.

If you look at where that ducting is on the floor plan then it may be from a internal fire-place ..It will not be the car park basement ventilation as the dual fans will run from the ducting in the car-parks then outside the buildings and straight up..It's just a pity that small branch is in the way as the flashing would tell as that is large extc-ducting and used for fire-places..But i could be wrong..imho..
