Mandarin is my first language. Learnt a bit English at my school years. But primarily reading. Picked up English from scratch, well pretty much, from the time when I landed in Sydney in 2002. Still with heavy accent, my daughter always picks on me about it.

Check out some of Tim Ferris's blog posts/ pod casts - he talks about hacking language learning. Very clever guy.

Yeah- I was learning Spanish and Italian at the same time and had to drop it - far too similar for my challenged mind to distinguish the two.

I went through the Pimsleur course, then turned to Duolingo. (Should have been doing both at once). With Duo, I suggest to go through the full course, or tree, of your target language, then get into what they call "Immersion", where you translate from your target language into English (assuming you are a native English speaker :) ). You can also do what's called the "reverse tree", where you do the course, learning English from your target language.

Plan to head to Italy again next year for a few weeks (not long enough!!) but longer term plan is to live there for an extended period.

Does any Property magazine know? They might run a story saying "How a monk became a property mogul" :)

I don't have a preference (yet). I have really only visited the main tourist areas (Venice/Verona in the north, Florence/Siena/Pisa in Tuscany, Rome, and Naples/Pompeii) but I think if I was to live there, I would want to be towards the north/central to give better access to the rest of Europe. Although having said that, I love Rome.

I've only ever been in the milder months (May and September) but as we plan to go in January next year (to fit in with school/Uni), I might get a different perspective! We expect to venture a little further east (Perugia), but as SIL and BIL may come with us, and have never been to Europe, it's completely up in the air at this stage.

I am either a master or a middle level-er in about 7 regional languages from Asia.
Conversational Spanish. Can understand some French.
Can imitate any dialect of English from around the UK. Can imitate 'native tongues' and pretend to have done deep religious studies of any major religion.
Learning to imitate Strayan. But me American accent gets in the way. And I program/write code in a few languages - dunno if they count.

I've used google translate on my iPhone which seemed to work ok.

At least better than Catherine Tate's attempt.
