This is the (ugly) ceiling in the downstairs area of two storey home.

Is it used for soundproofing reasons?

    Is it easy to remove?

Popcorn. Popular in older red bricks. Yes for noise and yes can be removed.

Easy to remove but was common for vermiculite ceiling to contain asbestos. In the building game, we treat all vermiculite as suspected asbestos (ACM) until tested. You can board over with Gyproc if there’s enough room to drop the ceiling.
