Since say the 90s? On top of my head:

    Nearly Extinct:

Video/DVD Store -> Now online (Netflix) etc. Funnily enough there is still one I could spot near my place a few weeks back.
Arcades - > Home Entertainment like Wii, PS2, Xbox etc. Ahh the days of spending $1/$2 coins on Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.
Photography Shops (Printing) -> Digital Cameras and Mobile Phones or should I say Facebook, Instagram etc.
    Payphones -> Mobile Phones
Milk bars -> Bigger Chains. I remember my cousins and I riding bikes to spend our $2 allowances on a bagful of lollies every 2 weeks.

    Downsized:

Banks -> Reduced to online banking. Remember the days of long queues just to deposit/withdraw money, I hardly remember the last time I stepped into a bank.

Computer Parts Shops -> LOL the days of queuing up at MSY! Last several computers purchased were tablets or laptops...pre assembled.

Such a vastly different world we live in since the 90s.

newspaper delivery - people just get the news online now
the media industry in general - Google and Facebook stole all their advertising dollars
taxi industry - killed by Uber

Are internet cafes still viable, and why do people use them?

I think there is still a place for the likes of MSY and PC Case gear for bespoke gaming units

I've driven past by one in East Malvern and one in Mt Waverley. All run by Mainland Chinese businesses (can see Chinese writing on the walls).

Viable? If rent is cheap enough? Id hazard to guess most are for immigration purposes or make money off secondary channels of business - the one in Mount Waverley also sells drinks/munchies.

Not sure why you'd want to go to an internet cafe though...

I'm surprised magazines are still around. Surely they would make more money having either an online subscription service, or free with adverts.

Newspapers are only good for starting a fire.

Internet cafes are great for online fraud activities if there's no CCTV.

I love this question because it shows the impact of progress.

Post this question again in 3 years time and I think Call Centres will be the big one, the AI technology to receive and transcribe a call then post to a CRM already exists, not long until we are placing orders vocally to an AI.

Not long after that, even that will become redundant as we move more towards a browse and order online method like Uber Eats. The need for voice communication reduces as more and more people trust online purchasing.

Not long after that, Google or someone similar will put a layer over the top so EVERYTHING you want be it a car, a ride, a Netflix account or your weekly groceries will all be ordered from the one system.

Just my thoughts on the future as I see it :).

A 90's thing that is pretty much close to extinction now.... LAN Parties :)

Do people still play games on gaming units? I thought XBOX/PS was all the rage?

Not the first, not the last.

Do you have a connection with Shepparton?

My father had a bookshop there for many years. He got out well before printed books became somewhat redundant.

No I actually never even heard of the place. I was trying to find some clip of the one that closed in Bondi not long ago. It was around since I was a kid...boys and girls used to get up to shenanigans in the back aisles...ahh the fun days. Feels like an era has ended with the shutting of that store. The 80s and 90s was such a magical time.

We used to have to rewind tapes back then. But people got careless with DVDs and forgot to rewind them.

My dad purchased a VCR in mid 80's for a grand. He had the foresight to purchase a VHS when the neighbours had beta that opened at the top. Ours had wireless remote when the scouses two doors up had a wired remote.

For the first few years we had to walk miles barefoot through the snow to hire a movie from the 'club'. What a short lived industry video hire was.

It would appear that video did not kill the radio star.
