What free email system do you use?

Yahoo has been painful in that it now combines all messages to and from, I'm also not sure who's copied in If I forward a copy

GMail doesn't appear much better in layout But I haven't used it

Is there anything free that looks like Outlook, or the old Yahoo?

gmail is actually terrible in terms of layout in my opinion. Advanced searches are also annoying as you have to type it manually rather than having a search box. Outlook is nicer in my opinion.
Having said that, there's no way I'd choose any email provider other than gmail. The reason for that is that it's part of google and google pretty much owns half the internet. Integration into google docs and google drive is easier as is life if you're using an android device.

From the point of view of someone who sends literally hundreds of thousands of emails a month from my various websites - and I've spent a LOT of time working on maximising the deliverability of my emails (to minimise the chance that they get blocked or end up in spam), I find that Gmail is by far the most reliable.

I have fewer problems with people not getting account confirmation emails, fewer spam complaints, and fewer issues with gmail compared to any other service.

If you really can't stand the Gmail interface, then I would suggest Microsoft as a 2nd choice. They are a lot tougher to deal with - but still fair in my experience.

Yahoo has become a joke. Avoid. Causes me more work than just about any other email domain.

I love gmail. Filters spam really well! Security is great... was just playing around with settings after Google blocked overseas attempted access.

Don't forget that Hotmail used to own this space - they were there well before Gmail were! Hotmail was one of the first web mail services - around 1996. The company Google didn't even exist back then.

Lots of people still using Hotmail just because that's what they've always used.

I switched to gmail a long time ago but continued to use my optusnet account as my main email account. My son tried to convince me to switch everything to gmail because I'd never lose access.

When I switched internet to another company, and had so much trouble I went back to Optus after a month, I was told that I could no longer get my long-held email name back. They'd told me (before I moved away) that as long as I was using an optus product or account I could get it back, and I said I had Optus tv (Foxtel, via Optus). Then once I moved back to them, they told me that Optus TV didn't count and it was lost forever.

    What a PITA.

I'll never go back to using an email that I can lose if I switch providers.

Stay the heck away from POP emails (most ISP ones are of this variety)

I believe it's a protocol that it uses.
Newer ones use IMAP from memory (could be wrong here)

Actually, most ISPs now offer IMAP access to mailboxes as well as POP access.

However, the issue is that the mailbox storage space isn't necessarily large enough to allow you to keep all your email on the server for IMAP access - so it's kind of moot.

I just strongly recommend that people avoid ISP based email in general - too many times I've heard someone complain that they don't like their ISP, but don't want to change because it would mean losing access to their email.

Separate your email address from your ISP and you gain the freedom to move internet providers with ease.

I also find that most ISPs struggle to deal with spam effectively - they either allow too much through, or are too zealous and you get too many false positives. Gmail are still by far the most effective in dealing with spam in my experience.

Gmail for me but use thunderbird on my desktop.

    Hotmail is crap for spam.

Using isp is a PITA, (I.e @bigpond) if you change isp you have to change email address & notify all ur contacts.
    Amazing how many use isp.

I am the same, I don't really like the layout but I wouldn't go with anything else :).

You can use Modzilla with gmail which makes it easier to read in some cases as the replies to email aren't grouped together.

But i find for searching i use web based gmail better.

I use Thunderbird connected to Gmail (G Suite) via IMAP as my desktop client ... when I want to search for emails, I'll fire up a browser, log in to Gmail and search there.
