Have a number of clients in the game over the years. Margins arent that good. Rent, electricity and staff costs are a killer, franchise fees and a supply chain that you cant tweak. And its all "big box" meaning huge distrubution issues eg warehouses, palletised picking and huge trucks. Government regulates pricing and drives prices higher and higher so customers see prices rising and the poor winery, brewer etc gets no more. Wine glut globally means there is always someone dropping prices and promoting it in catalogues. And this year it will get worse and the european wine oversupply is massive. The main suppliers dictate and control so much eg Diageo, Ashai, Coca Cola Amatil etc own all the major brands. Everyone largely sells the same stuff and that sets the prices. And majors throw in generic brands at low prices to stir the pot. If you arent really on top of paying for stock and selling it down the shelves can be filled with $300K of cash pretty easily. Those catalogue and TV ads - Stores have to buy the stock in and then basically give it away. The price of some products comprises around 70% taxes and its fixed meaning if prices drop its the supplier or the wholesaler / retailer who wears it. They are playing some games to help profits - Like selling 6 packs of craft beers. The brewer gets little of it. Many of them had to dump tanks of beer in lockdowns. Craft beer often unpasteurised and a short life.

Melbourne pubs must be sitting on millions of litres of dodgy beer that must be dumped. The main beers will be pasteurised and has a life of maybe 100 days. Given the earlier lockdown this cost may cripple some.

Covid has been a problem for managing stock turns meaning you may need to hold more. Its around now many are planning how the hell they can stock up for XMas and what that may (or may not) look like. Get it wrong and you could have a world of pain. (And yes...beer goes off)
