If you need any help with Customs or Quarantine I'm a customs broker, so would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

I'm currently working on a new business at the moment and hoping to kick off later this year.

My business partner in this business (forum member) and I have been chatting in the PC chat room for a few years and we have always sparked interest about business investment. We decided that we would do something, but had no idea. What we did was we just made a Trello board for us to access and just jotted down basic ideas, target markets, etc.

Then one day we were chatting about a few things on the board and we had an epiphany moment and managed to piece together some of the board ideas into a feasible business idea.

We are very confident that our new business will be a serious market disruptor to an age old industry with no modern accessories, and at a price point that the punters can afford.

We have been working on this for about 12 months now and we are starting to see the pointy end with our market product being developed. Exciting stuff, and I feel a bit more motivated.

The Trello board still has other ideas that we will pursue after this venture, and we hope to continue to add ideas and add value to our current business venture.

I was answering the question "What business would you start?"

I would start a renovation company.

    What business would you start?

Maybe the question should have been "what business should I start?" :D

My mate started a hardware importing business. It was going really well but folded due to cashflow issues. Right product, right price, demand etc, etc. Failed due to him and his mate not knowing how to manage cashflow. That's what is killing builders in Perth now. Builder cashflows are based around progress payments and are therefore lumpy. When your revenue is lumpy but outgoings are consistent it is very easy to get in trouble.

My point is that it's not just about having the good idea. You have to know how to make it run sustainably.

That's something I think about every day hence why I started this thread out of curiosity from people here in PC.

Importing/exporting is certainly an interesting space as there are sectors that aren't as heavily serviced as others. Something in the pet space could be interesting..

Have you tried combining importing with your renovation business? Could be a good combo. I have been thinking about this.

Importing the labour component would prob be the most financially beneficial.

    Not advice!

    Import the materials.
    Airtasker the labour *.

    * Results may vary.

I'd love to import a certain item from the US to sell here but it's expensive and heavy which makes it hard. No idea where to start but will look into it further.

Container sounds like the most effective way.

Perhaps speak with the person above that is a customs broker.

My wife and I started a side business where we help international students and families (mostly from Taiwan, China and HK) who need some immigration help with visas, paperwork etc. We work jointly with an immigration lawyer who processes the parts we can't do. It works out well. We actually didn't mean to get involved in this but over the years we have helped a few friends with the paperwork etc and thought it wouldn't be that difficult to commercialize our ability. We (my wife really) have many contacts overseas which helps. We haven't had the time to take on any clients in the last 3 months but when we are free again we will.

    Thanks, will look into it.

A while ago I looked into a milk kefir smoothie business. Waited for ages while govt tried to figure out where it sat in relation to food safety so I gave up. Now it's all the rage.
