    Hi all,

If you were to start a business in 2017, what would it be? Something practical or pie in the sky?

Curious to know what the smart folk would setup in this day and age.

    Cheers
    Al

Depends on what you want to get out of it.
I've just come out of a business, made a lot of money but took a lot of my time too.
Next business I get into will definitely be with very flexible and non restrictive working hours involved.
The money is not not a high priority.

If I wanted to start again and devote a lot of time, I'd do similar to what I did before.
Import product and sell online, easy money.

    Hi Ace,

Always been intrigued by your success with importing and selling. What sort of market research did you take? How did you determine the need for a particular product? How did you mitigate risk initially before really knowing what the result may be?

In this day and age of eBay and overseas sellers, how do you compete with them?

    thanks.

Easy with established clients in another business but I would not do it from scratch.

If I had to start from nothing it would be a serviced based network marketing business. One that does not involve pills or products or monthly fees but purely serviced based.

Then I would work by butt off to grow that as quickly as possible.

    How Cool is eBay?
Post #8 from over 10 years ago.

Introduction - young investor just starting out :)
Posts #17 and #20 from a few years ago.

Followed up the pool tables with gym equipment and built quite a business out if that, which recently sold.

For a start up of 12k, which was all stock, there was almost zero risk.
All I could suggest is to sell reasonably high priced products rather than trying to turnover large amounts of low valued products.
Transactional costs and order processing costs for low value sales eat into profit too much.

@Ace in the Hole - incredibly inspiring.

How did you manage with the others also selling the same product down the track?

Any suggestions for market research to determine what product will be useful?

What about imports? Did you have to go through a specific company? What about quarantine? Presuming the items you focused on had some wooden component.

Smashed avo Cafe. I'll even have private cabanas in the Cafe where patrons can visit to whinge to their friends the unaffordable prices whilst downing a 22 dollar mojito.

What I've been doing all my career- search marketing. Seo, sem. Basically helping companies show up (favourably) on Google. With companies going digital and most not having a clue what their digital agencies do, and struggling to hire good overseas talent on the new diluted visas, its a good space to be in. Wont start a business if I'm still working full time though- marketing 24/7 is too much even for the most hardcore fanatic.

I'd open a chain of music shops selling and renting cd's AND dvd's

Easy money there. The secret will be in late return fees.

I might have plenty to say.

Any questions, just ask. I had one store for 8 years, another one for 6.

a business idea that I would not share on an open forum. I have many business ideas in the pipeline, the problem is not so much working out what to do but which to choose first. You need to be creative and think hard. no one will tell you a great business idea for free.
