I am as car illiterate as a granny. But my first car was a manual.

It was quite thirsty on gas

My friend told me to change gears at lower Rev's to save fuel and to put it in neutral when going down hill.

    Does this even work?

Yep, but you will save a lot more petrol by turning the radio off.

You are far more likely to crash when driving in Neutral than in a gear, any gear.

If you want to salary sacrifice income into Super and you work for the Qld Govt, you have to go through a packaging service company and pay a fee (grrr) for the privilege. The Commonwealth govt has allowed all employees to get the same benefits of salary sacrificing into Super starting next week on 1st July.

We will be able to make direct payments into Super without going through pay centres and claim this post-tax payment as a tax deduction on our tax return for 2018.

So when you crash, you drastically reduce your car running expenses. Which is the object of the exercise.

Only if you deregister your car while its in with the repairer - saves green slip, insurance & rego

So you get a deduction at your marginal rate of tax or at the lower 15% ?

Only if the car is not write off.

If you are going to write it off, do so at the end of your insurance period. If you wreck it on day one, and insurance pays out, there's no pro rata refund of your insurance for the period that it will not be used.

    { insert legal disclaimer here.}

Marginal, I would imagine, just like if you salary sacrificed. I would imagine the Super company deals with any 15%s. That isn't something I need to think about.

    my tip, for the movies

buy movie tickets through the discoutn shops eg telstra or optus

then the tickets come down from $22-26 down to about $11.50-$13 per ticket
sometimes depending whom im taking, I buy a kids ticket for an adult which is $1 cheaper, eg if its me, my gf, and 3 kids, I have known to buy 1 adult +4 tickets, if its an eticket, they never check.
Buy the hoyts/village movie of the week which is about $13 per ticket as well depending on price

Never ever buy antyhing from the candybar, just go to woolies,

so a cheap date for me and my gf can be done for $30!

    Bargain

The entertainment book. I'm surprised that it has not been mentioned already. We always manage to recoup the cost (AUD 70) within one month. Apart from all the 25% off and buy one main course get one free meal deals which we use frequently, there are heaps of other deals such as grocery (5% off woolies), david jones (10%)m chemist warehouse (10 dollar off when buy 50). And don't forget one thirds goes to charity. :)

    My tip, for the movies.

Move to another country with much lower prices.

Prices in Colombia used to be less that $A10 for an American blockbuster in English with Spanish subtitles. But I used to go on half price Wednesdays.

In Canberra I am a member of a chain which gives half price tickets on Mondays. But I also have a seniors card which makes the price half of that again.

    I have a fixed income.
