Driving up to Falls Creek ski field today. Blossom trees and daffodils all the way, blue skies and snow on the mountain. Perfect spring day!

Really, both are wrong. The equinox is really the middle of the season, according to the sun and according to the growth. Flowering starts in August; by November the Spring is well and truly finished.

The Irish mark the start of Spring at February 1.

I used to work in a place that looked similar...counted the minutes until home time every day.

Marking the equinox as the middle would be way to early in most countries, but some do that. Some places just have 2 seasons (wet and dry), some have 6, heaps of definitions, just the historically accepted definition in western culture for the seasons to start on the equinox & solstices, and if you look at the temperatures at the start and end of summer for example (Dec 21 to Mar 21) they are roughly the same, the temps lag the sun position by about half a season. But like I said before, its a bit pedantic, just a human definition after all but the "Sep 1" has always irked me, should be related to equinox in some way not a random date like Australia and Ireland do.
