My parents won't answer the landline unless you talk to the answering machine first...

I have been receiving phone calls from landline but they won't speak when you pick up. Seems like automated calling device. A search on internet for that particular number is a spammer. I saved the number on banned list but a similar call was made. Argh...

    Same.

I think it is a fishing expedition to see if folks answer the phone at a designated timeslot, then attack later.

Cool; I get to play more games with the callers. :p

Can't be bothered going to that tgrouble. I just wait.

I might say; ever since playing my games to annoy the crap out of them, the frequency of calls has dropped waaaay down.

The most successful one I've found is to say you'll get the owner of the business/property, put down the phone and walk away...leaving the line open. They hang up eventually.

The loss of time wasted on the phone for them, seems to be the biggest future deterrent.

Our number at home is silent, and we still get them every now and then.

Thank fully; answering machines have been invented.

I suspect that they call multiple numbers at one time. The person who answers first gets spoken to. The others stay in a call list for later, except the numbers which don't work.

We have had the same calls -- they call you and ask you to identify yourself. Most get really offended when I tell them to identify themselves by telling me the last transaction on my credit card or asking them how many loans I have with that bank (the questions they usually ask me when I call). They don't seem to understand that THEY called ME.

This happened to me 4 months ago with a call from comm bank. I hung up after hearing the computer generated call. I googled if any scams are currently on at the moment and sure enough, there is a scam going on using comm bank calls.
I called my bank to report the scam, as this was advised to do.
After speaking to comm bank they advised that yes this scam is taking place, but the call wasn't a scam for me, it was genuine.
Asked what they called for, turns out when I locked in my interest rates my loan was short on repayment funds. They stuffed up my offset account numbers. Lucky I called back actually.
Also told them their computer generated call system is stupid and I'll never respond, use a real person next time.

Call centers work off a dialer system so in the background a computer is loaded with customer profiles and phone numbers are dialled to a schedule. When someone answers the computer recognises that and transfers the call to a call centre operator. They just sit at their desks with a headset on and when a call comes through they hear a beep and that means a call has been dropped through and they start talking. That's why sometimes there's a delay at the start of a call after you say "hello".

There seems to be new---one where they claim there from a well---known Australian Telco and from the answering machine it starts with we are from ######a and unless you press number one your account will be blocked and cancelled and pay the reconnect costs within 2 hours and it's from a 02 number ..
I'm still waiting for the ATO and Federal Police to turn up from last week to arrest me for the 43 k I owe in back taxes and fines ..The only way I have found to stall them for a week is tell them your a house---sitter and the owners are interstate..

I'm just in the habit of letting most calls through to the automated answering device. If I so pick up, I advise them the person that they're after has passed/moved/not known.

For your mobile phones, download the app 'Should I Answer?'
Automatically rejects a majority of these scam callers. I love it.

I get a call once or twice a week claiming they can save me money on my electricity bill in NSW.

    I'm in QLD

My bill is next to nothing

I tell them every time to take me off their list, it's only their time they are wasting but they never do.
