    Hi all,

Regarding a bathroom renovation, which is a full gut and starting again from scratch, Removing overhead bath shower etc

What is the usual process for a full no barrier walk in shower with fall to waste?

Is cutting out the subfloor, re-enforcing the joists and laying a lower subfloor, then using a gradient ready made base from highgrove or similar level to the room the best way to go? Or are people still screeding shower bases?

If anyone has links to the right products to use would be much appreciated.

Also as trades, in which order are the trades used, Builder, plumber, waterproofer/ tiler?

    People still screed :p

It depends on how level you want it though - I can't think of any bases that don't have a large lip on them??

I had a builder recently do this and from recollection the order was
    1. take up the floorboards
    2. reinforce the joists
    3. do any plumbing prelay
    4. put down new floor sheeting
    5. waterproof
    6. screed
    7. tile
    8, install plumbing items
    9 install cabinetry, mirror
8 tile the hob of the cabinetry
    9. put the glass screen in, install towel rails etc etc

    End result

I can put up some progress shots that I took if you like?

Beautiful mate thanks. I’d love to see some progress pics.

Your right the bases do have a lip which they cut off to bring level. Seems like a lot of work, and screed actually seems like a easier way of doing it if you get someone who knows what they are doing.

May I ask where this was done? I’m in hawthorn Brisbane & have 2 bathrooms to do.

I was hoping to do the Demo myself to save costs, hence is handy knowing what process will be followed so I don’t gut too much.

This was in Perth, WA. It was a room that was created in part of an old loungeroom. So it had one new stud wall and the existing floor removed

    Quite the job! Looks good.
And how well does the shower drain? I take it the builder just allowed enough fall to waste as he was screening?

Would you mind letting me know what sort of cost in total? (PM if not comfortable posting)

I'd add that the membrane shoud be laid over the screed so that it is applied with falls to the waste rather than applied to the flat flooring material.

THis bathroom was about $12k but some of that was structural elements like a new window and wall.
There is a channel drain all the way along the middle of the room which everything slopes down to.

Great layout given the narrow space. Looks amazing!
What is the dimenaion of the room. I have a similar narrow shape bathroom and was wondering if i could fit a bath and shower with toilet.

Thanks. The room is 1600mm x 3600mm. The bath is a Clark freestanding 1400mm so that it would fit in the space. There is a double vanity at the door end so if you went with a single vanity it could all fit in a smaller room.

You can see the plans here WA: renovation for a retain and build (North Perth)

Under the new stud wall - what reinforcement did you put for the wall itself? The joists underneath would need to bear the weight of all the wall tiles.

@Westminster did you manage to find matching cornices? Or manage to use ones in bathroom?
Never mind you dropped the ceiling :( client didn’t want to keep the character internal look?

@Arnel the cornice wouldn't have been in the same context as the rest of the room.

The current joist system was strong enough to support it - I don't believe any extra was put in umderneath that wall. All the internal walls in this house are brick except for that wall so it weighs less than all the other walls which are sitting on the same system. The wall on the RHS of the bathroom is brick, the new wall is stud.
We did add extra joists parrallel to that wall to handle the new floor system

I have two bathrooms with a “fall” but they were built from new, they were both screeded. The first tiler said the last one he did didn’t work ! How reassuring, the second one had put a lip on the floor and they took it up and re did it at my insistence. There is a butterfly? Valve in the back yard that you had to have.

don’t forget to consider flow rates of shower head and waste for that nice walk in feel without any barrier
