Except that Gone with the Wind only won 10 Academy Awards, while Ben Hur won 11 :p

Interestingly, only 2 movies have ever matched that feat (and none have surpassed it) - Titanic and LotR: Return of the King both won 11 Oscars.

So based on that criteria - there is still nothing that is "Bigger than Ben Hur", even if we do have several movies which were as "As Big as Ben Hur" :D

Based on production costs, Ben-Hur was a lightweight - sure, it was by far the most expensive movie ever produced at the time (1925), but even adjusted for inflation it only comes in at around $129m - which is far less than today's mega movies cost.

Most expensive inflation adjusted movies List of most expensive films - Wikipedia:
    1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011): $422m
    2. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015): $386m
    3. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007): $362
    4. Avengers: Infinity War (2018): $316m
    5. Titanic (1997): $312m
    6. Spider-Man 3 (2007): $312m
    7. Justice League (2017): $307m (made a loss!)
    8. Tangled (2010): $299m
    9. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009): $292m
    10. John Carter (2012): $288m (also one of the biggest commercial flops ever!)
    11. Waterworld (1995): $283m
    12. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006): $280m
    13. Avatar (2009): $277m
    14. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016): $275
    15. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018): $275m (made a loss!)
    16. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015): $274m
    17. Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017): $268m
    18. King Kong (2005): $266m
    19. Spider-Man 2 (2004): $265m
    20. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008): $262m
So, by that measure, there are plenty of movies that have been "Bigger than Ben Hur" - indeed, any movie that ever made a profit at the box office has been bigger than Ben Hur :p

I really enjoyed the first couple, but then got fatigued by how often they came out (and their fairly repetitive formula).

This is old, but if you get a chance to watch Lawrence of Arabia in 70mm in the cinema, do it!

It clocks in at over 3 and a half hours and has an intermission, but it is the purest cinema experience you will ever have.

I really like the origin movies, but I find the Avengers movies to be a bit tedious. I think I find that of most attempts to do a cross-over (be it movie, tv, or even the original source) - they are largely a **** to appeal to the fanbois.

We are working through all of the MCU movies with the kids. The first one they watched was actually Captain Marvel at the cinema (awesome btw), and we are up to Captain America: Civil War. Need to get through 7 more movies in time for End Game...

    Cheers,
    Inertia.

obviously very subjective but all but one of those films is decent to excellent,

no surprises in guessing which was has broken heaps of records for being the biggest flop

If you really want a great long movie then check out “once upon a time in America” - with Robert De Niro and James woods.

Directed by Sergio Leone and music by Ennio Morricone.

    Need I say more.

About 4 hours in length. But pure art. This is way movies should be made - as art.
