I'm undecided on this proposal. I don't see the correlation between vacant houses and family violence. They might be better taxing foreign investors who live overseas, buy a property here in Oz, and then leave the property vacant (like my neighbour). I think a lot depends on how they define that a property has been vacant for a 'long time'. They need to acknowledge that it can take a while to clean up a house, renovate or sort out a deceased estate (particularly if it is going through probate). A vacancy of 12 months doesn't seem unreasonable in some circumstances.

Bet you it will still get built some time in the future. When it does, it will cost a hell of lot more.

Another example of Government making good use of OUR money.

Britain has a tax on empty bedrooms.

Just a matter of time before the vacancy tax becomes a bedroom tax. 1 person living in a 2 bedroom house? Pay your tax!

Liberty is being eroded on a daily basis. The government now chooses what ever dwindling 'rights' we may have, and will continue to find new and inventive ways to tax us for them.

In other words, everything normal in the Land of Oz. Nothing to see here, move along.

    Ho hum.

Misinformation: It is not a tax but a reduction in housing welfare. Depending on the political persuasion it is gleefully interpreted as "a bedroom tax" or "spare bedroom subsidy".

    Bedroom tax: are you affected?

So, will Land of Oz be liberated when social welfare stops ? It will be liberating and cost free to live behind gated communities.
BTW what happens to the homeless victims of domestic violence which was the OP, side tracked in this shock and horror of loosing the liberty and rights (as if legislated) ?

    this is completely wrong.

as mentioned above, they do not have a bedroom tax, that's what some people have called it but it isn't a tax in any way, shape or form.

it applies to people on a particular kind of welfare or govt scheme. if they have a house with excess bedrooms their welfare is decreased.

it does not apply to the the vast majority of people who are free to have as many spare rooms as they want or can afford.

    - it is not a matter of time before the proposed vacancy tax becomes a bedroom tax
    - our liberties are not being eroded every day, particularly with regards to the proposed tax being discussed here

Victoria raises foreign property tax to 7% along with absent landholders surcharge to 1.5%, expecting to raise 486 million over next 4 yeas. Not good for Waverlys. Isn't it similar to exit stamp duty in NSW 2004 except the foreign element ?

(Victoria's loss is) Good for Queensland though
Victoria raises foreign property buyer tax to 7pc from 3pc

It doesnt hurt NSW nor the rest of Aus for that matter.
Edit: I think the more logical place for the overseas investors to go is Sydney before thinking about Brisbane - people who would have bought Melbourne are still primarily big city focused and if its the mid range - prestige type market, Sydney also offers these suburbs more so than Brisbane.
