But we don't have an elected PM. The parliamentary party elects a leader.

    Sorry. Pedantic.

Not the hard right, the base. 2/3 of the base do not support him. At least half the party do not support him. Labor voters do not vote Liberal so it is irrelevant how much they support him. Turnbull is the Liberals Kevin Rudd.

Out of interest where do you get those figures? Measured at time of previous leadership?

Swing voters in the centre will vote for him over Abbott. And that is where elections are won. Not the 30% either side who vote for whoever is their chosen brand.

Sinodinos was on the ABC explaining why he is backing Turnbull, claims Abbott has no economic substance and broken too many promises.

I've never been a fan of Abbott. He's getting his just desserts after all the mud he has thrown. Just couldn't stop acting like an opposition leader even after he won government. When you win the fight you've then got to unite the nation, not try to drag out old battles.

I have respect for the Liberal Party. I've been worried about Abbott's dictatorship-democracy for a while. Good to see they won't let the country down when it comes to the crunch. I wish there was a better way to keep the ego-maniacs from getting to the top and staying there so long. JH what a waste of time, mate. TA what did we do?

I won't be. He was Mr 18% after all, Mr 57-43 2PP against Rudd. The data trumps all.

''Among Coalition voters Abbott outranks Turnbull – 33% (down five) to 25% (down five). ''
    http://theconversation.com/another-poll-knock-to-coalition-and-abbott-46177

So not 2/3rds but 3/4s of Coalition voters do not support Turnbull.

Since it needs to be repeated, swing votes are irrelevant if your base does not vote for you.

Swinging voters determine elections not party diehards from either side.

If your base does not vote for you, swinging voters are irrelevant. Not sure how else to explain this simple concept to you.

I'm not using the stats to support Abbott, I'm using them to prove Turnbull does not have the support of Coalition voters - the very people he needs first.

With a predicted swing against the libs in the Canning by election of nearly 10%, does Tony really have grass roots support?

And 2/3rds do not support Abbott either.

Swing voters tend to be in the centre. Moderates. Abbott does not appeal to them as much as Turnbull. Like the alp lib members will vote for their candidate.

Six years as leader of the party suggests he does/did. The problem Abbott has is he helped bring this on himself. Turnbull has always been an egotistical snake in the grass, Hockey has always been an inefficient and poor treasurer, loyalty has won out over competence.

You really don't understand Liberal voters if you think we're as tribal as you.
