Its funny... i read some rumor (some urban legend that is largely unfounded Im sure!) Of Hollywood and Bollywood's elite celebrities (you know... the Brad Pitts etc. of the world who live in lavish gated mansions on acreage etc.) briefing their IT and security teams to set up perimetre transmissions that render drones unable to work, within a range of their property. I wonder if that is a future problem we face? Further loss of privacy due to relaxed rules for aerial gadgets etc.

Paparazzis and political journos have invested big in drones to capture candid and controversial moments.

MTR, in some of the inland areas, REA have been using drones a lot and for some time now, it is normal. In a hot Syd or Melb market, hardly needed...I have seen some ads in Bris area using drone shots. usually to show how close water is.

In my second year doing an computer systems & electronics engineering degree at Uni we had a project to put some sensors onto a remote controlled car so it could drive itself and navigate without crashing. It was basic obstacle avoidance, nothing predictive. Depending on the sensors used, some of the students have varying degrees of success.

In my final year, I had some visibility to an actual flying drone for maritime surveillance. Basically an automated controller for what today is a military drone.

20 years later I look at today's drone tech and it's amazing. I got to thinking why we couldn't build something like this, back then. The programming is an evolution, but not really revolutionary in it's difficulty.

It's the hardware that has made this possible. GPS was a military exclusive technology with 200m resolution. Batteries weighed several kilos and a computer chip with 1/10th of these drones processing power cost thousands of dollars. A camera with a fraction of the optical functionality back then would have been bigger than the drone and required manual control, forget about live signal transmission. The military had tech like this 20 years ago on a larger scale, but no chance of it being available at a consumer level at even 100 times the cost.

After all that, we now use this technology to make cool videos to put on YouTube and advertise real estate. Technology has come a very long way in the last 20 years.

It does indeed. Can hook up your iThing to view through the drone camera.

The higher end ones can go up to 10km in perfect conditions with very little real time delay. I believe most use wifi/radio waves to transmit the images back to the controller but the Mavic uses Lightbridge.

Some guys where flying racing drones down at the park last night when walking my dog. I casually asked how fast they can go and they said they are doing about 60kph now, but with fresh battery around 109kph. I said cool they look fun. They say do you want to try in the googles so I said sure. Then they fly one all around loops and up high then right down low. So much fun I want one the googles make you feel like your in the cockpit.

I've seen a startup using drones for monitoring collared wildlife to great effect.

Mine can go up 75km/h but this is in sport mode and disables the crash avoidance sensors. Not ready for that yet.

Dominoes Pizza recently delivered it's first pizza via drone in New Zealand. No doubt a PR stunt but after playing around with one this week I am amazed by the possibilities.

I hate drones. They have awesome prospects, but I can't help but see them turning the world a dark shade of ugly.

Rigged with a camera they're a massive invasion of privacy. Rigged with an i.e,d they're a terrorist's dream come true...
