    Hi All,

First home buyer here, I am quite excited to get stuck into some smaller works to update quite dated interior of the house we just bought.

I would like to ask for your opinion on how to update the look of this area?
I will paint the room softer white but was hoping to add some paint to this area as well? the floor is laminate wood style as well. It looks very brown.

Is painting the wood here even good idea? Should i just leave it?
I was thinking to paint the area behind and under the stairs white and leave the staircase as it is.

    Thank you!!

    So is this 80’s

Question is..... how much to refurbish and get rid of the timber walls?? This would completely change it and may do the trick

You can just gyprock over the timber. Remove any existing beading and then sheet and replace the beading with either the removed stuff or new depending on the look you want. It is pretty cheap to do.

A quick estimate for below the stairs would be 2 x 2400 x 1200 sheets of gyprock - approx $50 filling and painting under $150. $200 budget for diy. $500 for trades to do?

I would go most cost effective option.

Also are those 80s wooden curtin rods.

Look at different window fittings, will also help. A bit of tweaking could make a huge difference And not too costly

It depends if you are going to keep the laminate floor. If you are going to change that then the wood wall might not be so bad.

But once you paint that wood wall it's hard to reverse the decision so gyprocking over it might be the answer to preserve that option

I do love the style (VJ or Vertical Join) wall cladding so I'd paint it to keep the look.

    hang on
    I love this

This is very much in vogue, many will paint the timbers white. Colour of walls would need to change:)

As long as it has height its very nice and grand

you will be surprised a good paint color combination will do.

Paint is the way to go to transform the look.

Thank you all!! Much appreciated. I will try to paint over if first and if its looking bad, i will rip it off and replace or cover with gyprock.

    Thanks!

If you rip off the panelling an find a massive crack in the wall, quickly replace said panelling and pretend you did not see anything! :D

Painting over the existing paneling could produce a great outcome like this:

Ah I've painted over or gyprocked many a timber or brick feature wall in my time - brings back memories :D Certainly modernise by painting over the timber wall but think carefully before painting the entire staircase. Perhaps a combination of leaving end posts and handrail timber and just painting the spindles to match the white walls.... like this?

just don't paint the stair treads white, whatever you do- nightmare to keep clean!!

I wonder if wider boards and horizontal makes a difference, very effective....

I fear this may not work out as wood panels are much smaller and verticle, 80s design

What about in between the stair treads (the vertical piece between steps)? Not sure what you call that part of the stair. Is it 'risers'?
