I actually had some CLR in our toilet as I typed my answer, and it is clean as a whistle now.

I would not use Hydrocloric acid. It will work, but is very bad for your lungs and if it splashes you, you'll know it. And you should always add the acid to water and then add that to the toilet. I wouldn't just pour it into the toilet.

I've used it in a toilet before, but the fumes, risk of inhaling it or burning myself mean I'd not do it again.

You left out the most important parts.

    1. You don’t need to add a lot of acid.
    2. You need to let it soak for a bit.

    3. This is going to be flushed down the drain so you should neutralize the acid with baking soda after it has done the job but before flushing. Throw a good couple of handfuls in to be safe. It will foam up a bit.

    4. And make sure you wear strong gloves, a mask and safety glasses as well as open the window.
    5. Hydrochloric acid is very dangerous.

I'll add that a friend who cleans the bathrooms in her family business uses Coke in the toilets to clear the scale and says it works a treat. She said she doesn't drain any water, just pours Coke in and leaves it for a while (maybe overnight) and that would be safest of all as a first try.

I don’t think it matters if you add acid directly to the toilet - but pouring from a big container might cause splashes.

However, water must never be added to acid - always acid to water.

When I did my toilet (like you, once was enough - never again) I poured half a cup into a plastic container so I could control the amount and poured that into the small amount of water that was sitting at the bottom of the pan.

I ended up getting a new toilet put in. Would use vinegar in future, or CLR if needed.

At times I work with chemicals for a living.

I would try CLR or washing machine cleaner ie Salfamic acid. I would not recommend HCL.

If you use HCL at least download and read MDS for it

`I think white vingar is better value for money then coke to pour down the toilet.
Sponge out the water, pour in the white vinegar, wait overnight, scrub a dub dub!

A new discovery today! (I guess comes from being housebound during this lockdown)

Our toilet had some very persistent stains along the back where water would trickle down if flush valve didn't close properly, as well as a nasty brown line along the waterline in the bowl.

    I have tried:
    • toilet duck
    • plain bleach
    • RP7 (apparently it's one of the uses of it...)
    • CLR
None of these worked to remove the marks completely.... until this morning (dramatic drum roll)....

Running out of toilet duck after dumping an ecologically dangerous amount of it down the toilet, I opened a bottle of White King Power Clean.

Holy moly! It took the stain off!!!

    Yuck that looks gross.

Try drinking 3 or 4 longnecks and wait an hour or two. When you can’t hold any longer just go and give that porcelain a good ol’ high pressure blasting lol.
