a family has moved into a new luxurious house where they waters their garden with rainwater, and it seems it also flows to their toilet for them to flush, However when the storage is empty then toilets cant be flushed and they dont know how to switch it to the normal water system. does anyone know about this system.

Run the hose into the rainwater tank until they can figure out the bypass system

    Hi Justine

Is this a hypothetical question or something you’ve seen on the Internet?

You would think it would also use 'grey water' as a backup and mains after that, don't want to burn out the pump

Yep, my house... Toilets and washing machine run off tank water.

When the tank is empty I stick the hose in to top it up which, coincidentally, also makes it rain when I've finished filling the tank up.

Our new house has a tank whose water is used in the toilets and laundry.

When the tank runs down, the pump automatically switches over to mains water.

If one didn't have mains water, one would have to buy it in :)

They must have a cheap pump set up. What you need is a Davey rainbank which automatically switches to mains water when the tank runs dry.

Or check that the pump has been turned on and the breaker hasn't tripped.

We manually turn off the hose that comes from the tank and manually turn on the hose that comes from mains. Removes any guesswork :)

Ours switches over automatically to mains once the rain tank is empty.

It could be a Davey rainbank

You may find some caring water monster has turned off the mains supply at the pump
(so they know when tank water runs out)

So it could be as simple as turning the valve back on ;-)

Almost all of them are supposed to automatically change between tank and mains water OR auto top up when the tank water is low. The auto top up systems are more reliable.

The auto top up system sounds to be not working. Contact a plumber or property manager if they are renting. As it will not fix itself
