Looking forward to an answer from @Biz

Looks like hard(bore) water deposit that has built up over time.

Is the toilet on bore water?

If so, google hard water stain removal.

We used to have something similar when we lived up north - I used to pour bleach down and let it sit. It worked.

Bleach will probably whiten stain but not remove build up. Pouring white vinegar in and leaving it for as long as possible might remove it. Scouring with a steel brush or griddle cleaning pad will remove it but it takes off the smooth surface of the porcelain and it will build up faster in future.

Flush toilet after each use. Its called poop.

If porcelain is damaged replace cistern. Scratching the bowl isnt a great idea.

its from the water supply to the house, not much to prevent it.

I have used CLR. best to try and get rid of the water out of the bowl to increase the concentration of the CLR (or chosen concoction). Let it soak overnight then dive in. scrub with a scourer but not steel as ambit said. You might go through a few, you need a good bit of elbow grease. or a wooden spoon (or similar) to lever off the bowl and losen it. repeat clr a few times if needed

(in the end i used a steel scourer :D cleaned it but scratched it!

    Thats easy fixed

Go to woolies/coles, buy 2 litres white vinegar

Turn off water, use a sponge to mop water out of bowl. Pour in vinegar and allow to soak overnight.

Scrub and flush in morning, fixed.

Following this thread. Seems like a lot of reasonable suggestions.

Can confirm this also worked for me, along with the other suggestions to remove as much water as you can from the bowl to increase the concentration.

It actually took quite a few overnight bleach baths over a number of days.

I second this. It worked for me but I just poured in the vinegar. I didn't bother mopping water out of the bowl.

If you do that, please wear gloves!

This won't shift it, even removing the water from the bowl so the concentration is strong. Bleach will help. Our plumber mate says CLR is the way to shift it. We get this calcium build up, and I believe it is our Brisbane water.

I've removed the water and let bleach sit overnight. Still doesn't remove it totally or even bleach it totally. Wooden spoon may lift it. I've not tried CLR yet as I'm not sure if it will damage the surface. But that is what our plumber says to use.

Maybe use a blue loo additive to disguise it?

I can also confirm that 2 litres of coke will also dissolve it :)

I am not joking. Same as above, get as much water out as you can so it's not dilute. Leave overnight. Then use a toilet scrubber to dislodge the build up.

If the previous owners have tried scratching it off and they have damaged the porcelain then it will be hard to ever fix. Then go to Bunnings and spend $250 on a toilet that will be way better than what it is now Mondella WELS 4 Star 3 - 4.5L/Min White Concerto Back To Wall Toilet Suite

Easiest way is to turn off the water supply to the cistern and flush a couple of times or siphon it out. CLR is available from Bunnings

It worked in Perth. It looked like the exact stain. I left the vinegar overnight and scrubbed with a normal toilet brush the next day (plastic bristles, not metal).

2L of Coles White Vinegar is $1.32, so definitely worth a try.

If that doesn't work, CLR 1L is $18.40 from Bunnings but I'm sure it wouldn't take much to clean that. Follow the directions on the bottle.
