So I've been doing a quick and easy paint job Reno recently. Flying through. Seems to be progressing nicely

Did the walls. Ready to cut in. It's hot hot hot. Run out of paint. Take the near empty paint can to burnings to color match.

I am happy as Larry due to near completion of my paint job.

Start cutting in. Finish half a room. And realize..... Oops. The color don't match by metric mile!!!!!!

So now I have to go back and pretty much redo 75% of the job since they don't match!!!!! Lots of tears and cursing could have been heard.....

Fortunately only half the rooms needed cutting in.
And fortunately the walls are divided so only need to paint the top half... So rooms now are two toned., but look fine

    Grrrrrrr.......

Anyone else made some dumb mistakes?

Plenty. As long as you can do a complete wall, it's unlikely the colour difference will show because light hitting adjoining walls changes colour drastically, even if it is the same colour.

Anyone asks... tell 'em it is a feature wall.

OMG! I could list lots. We did a minor reno on a house then decided to do a full blown reno (new bathroom, kitchen, paint, flooring, took out a minor wall). That was a learning experience. But YouTube is fantastic.
I learned how to tile a splashback, cut cornice etc.
The lucky thing is, you learn from your mistakes.

Yep. First time me and my mate tiled a bathroom to the roof, all walls. We didn't use a laser measure and by the point where the tiles meet at the finish of the job they are out by 40mm. Lucky it is above the door so not very noticeable but it a good lesson to buy a laser level

Figure out the amount of paint needed to paint the room, if you dont have enough, buy more paint and mix the two paints together before going ahead with the job :D

We have been using Tradex Satin finish with the same colour for years. Makes it each for touch ups and just painting the occasional wall etc also means we don't have to cut in the ceiling on a repaint. We now find that Tradex have dropped the Satin finish and now only have Low Sheen or Semi Gloss. This will mean having to cut in every property we relet as the gloss levels will not match.

In my experience colour matching doesn't work. better to use up what you can in one room and then match for the rest. They will be different a bit but at least it's a different part of the house so not too easy to notice.

Agreed, i find it best to paint a whole wall in those circumstances.
No matter how close (if not exact), you can pick out the repainted section on the same wall, but on an adjacent wall it is much harder to pick the colour doesn't match.

Why not? I've bought paint only from Bunnings for small jobs and GraysOnline for big ones

    1. Specialist paint shops are cheaper (unless you are looking at the incorrectly tinted paint - ie the rejected paint at bunnings)
    2. Specialist paint shops are generally better at matching paint colours. Exact match is not possible unless you know the actual colour.

Thanks for this! I've never known that before. It'll be really handy for my next reno project in Feb. :)

Ah, the good old days when a family friend worked in Bunnings paints and all the colours my family needed (hogs bristle, etc) all happened to be mistinted just an hour before we turned up...

I painted 25 tonne of structural steel the wrong colour for a Centerlink building. $35,000 job. Was told "Dulux" "Charcoal"....so I painted it in Australian Standard 'Charcoal' using Dulux system. Spec called for an actual colour called "Dulux Charcoal" which is a standard powdercoating colour after the fact. Long story short, fabricator did have scope all in writing and just relayed information on their own purchase order, but not a detailed exact description of the spec or the spec itself.

Instead of transporting it all back to my shed for repainting, I convinced the principal contractor to just change the colour of the powdercoated screens to the colour I had painted. To redo the few that were done cost from memory $3,000 - so I still luckily made a few pesos from the job. It would have been ugly if I had to redo it all!

Re. Reno stories - I've got plenty, but I'll only share a few:
Organising a wedding and renovating a whole townhouse at the same time. Lesson learned... well I had hoped until...

I Gutted our current house and did a full Reno including new kitchen (deleted walls), 11 new windows, etc. all while my wife was 2-3 months pregnant with severe morning sickness and I was travelling 2-2.5hrs into work each way each day then 15-18hr days Reno-ing on the weekend doing the small stuff not worth paying builders for.
    Ah,
    That's living ;)
Although one of my favourites from the most recent Reno: my wife painted up all the old skirting and trims. Took ages as it's fiddly work.
Then I go and rip them all off for bigger ones!!

May have been on the couch that night if we had a lounge room...:D

Why I only ever use the same white low sheen brand straight off the shelf (e.g. Taubmans Tradex 10L White Low Sheen Interior Wall Paint) (can also be used on ceilings), no issues with matching.
All white may seem a little sterile to some when the place is empty but once the furnishings etc go in its all good...

I spend so much time ruminating over and testing out colours and tend to find that once I find a couple I like, it's best to stick to them.
I still love clotted cream in any non-northern interior. I add just a touch to white and it turns out perfect, though not done scientifically. Each room would be a slightly different tint.
I now also love warm neutral for exteriors. I can lighten it up too and add some grey pebble for the northern side. White duck is also gorgeous.
I go for names I like so that I remember them and I associate them with positive results. Even though I like the colour 'self destruct', I just can't bring myself to use it. Probably the same with 'hogs bristle'.

Dumb mistakes... mate thats what Diy is all about. Making dumb mistakes and having to do the same job 2 or 3 times.

Ive had to redo tiling a shower base three times because I didnt water proof right. Ive had to take out a door and reinstall when I put it in backwards. Lots of dumb mistakes. You are not alone.
