    Wouldn't know, they haven't happened yet ;)
I envision mine will likely be trying to invest in property and raise young children, :D

However, I commend this man. He made a decision, followed a plan, and now if he so chooses - can travel etc for much longer than the 3 years sacrifice he spent - all the while knowing he has a home base when he needs it.

Good on him. Personally I'd rather pay off my mortgage in 8 years and be comfortable (did the 80-100 hours a week gig years ago - wasn't fun and screwed my health), but he's got it out of the way and can now get on with enjoying life and do other things. The negativity is disappointing but not surprising. Many people have a sense of entitlement that if you succeed at something, you've somehow stolen that opportunity from them, therefore their retaliation is justified - even if what you've done has bugger all to do with them.

    Here you go:

Attacks like, "Why do you work so hard and take opportunities away from us?" do irritate me (but then I breathe and let it go - theoretically). This was the same thing that was said in ye olde times when women chose to work (stealing jobs from deserving menfolk who needed to support their families), same thing for immigrants, same for "rich people" who don't need to work so hard or be so stingy.

Sometimes it's hard to let go of the scarcity mentality. Or maybe I just don't understand  Maybe these people really are stealing our opportunities.

That person complaining about taking that opportunity away is the same person who shouldn't have to work in a supermarket stacking shelves because they've got an arts degree...

Haters gonna hate pretty much sums it up. Good on the guy, giving up life for 3 years of your prime with the aim to claw it back from now forward is a massive sacrifice to make, can't hate on that if you're a rational type!

But then there may be those who berate him for not continuing to work those long hours for the rest of his life.

3 years out of a lifetime is not a large sacrifice, and his reward will last a lifetime.

He has saved probably 20 years worth of traveling money through the interest he won't pay.

Horses for courses. Some people are savers and some are spenders but most are somewhere in between.
I personally don't think living so frugal is what I would want to do, but I understand why someone would.

But I'm not sure he will.. extreme frugality can become an ingrained problem and can cause someone to miss out on a lot of life experiences. From the article:
"But some habits die hard. At last check-in, Cooper is still living frugally and holding down two jobs. And even though he's paid off his mortgage, he's still renting the upstairs and living in his basement."

Life is short and unpredictable, so have dessert first.

Even the person concerned admitted that he regretted being so single minded by working so hard and putting every cent on the mortgage to the detriment of any social life. You are only young once.

Whatever you do in life there will always be someone who disagrees.

Ignore - keep doing what makes you happy.

Even if he did not pay off his house, those people would still not be satisfied.

Haters gonna hate - but it's the ones who act on it that you have to watch out for. I've seen people (incl. various housemates, colleagues, certain family members) target others they felt didn't "deserve" their success. Their thought process is like: "X has it better than me or hasn't paid their dues - so it's ok to steal/"accidentally" spill coke onto their computer/hide documents/break their things, etc". Of course they won't say it aloud, but the motivation's there.

Which is why it's so important to associate with people who have the same values and vision as you. That's why I only hang out with people who have a growth mindset. They don't need to be alpha over-achievers, just people who take responsibility for their actions and aren't afraid to put in the work to achieve their goals.
