@balwoges - I agree with your neighbour. An alternative would have been to apply to council for a permit to chop down the tree, citing an aborist's report, pay the fee, drive to town, hire a chainsaw and achieve the same result. By the time you receive the permit the cat would have come down (unless it got stuck in a fork of the tree).
