You all make me sick! I managed to grow some basil on my rented one bedroom appartment balcony. It got destroyed by an army of caterpillars.

How do you keep the bugs away? Or is that just a city thing?

I did try to pick them out. But they kept coming and by the time I would wake up in the morning there would be 10 fat caterpillars chewing on whatever is left. I just gave up. I think it’s because my balcony had the only eatable thing in 10km radius.:(

Don’t worry. A few years back all we had was a balcony on a high rise apartment. High enough up to avoid some pests. Moved into a rental home and put three large pots of Italian parsley we brought with us on the balcony. Possum ate the lot in one night:(.

Will have to try once my veggie garden stops being a building site. Similar latitude but your climate at nodrogsville possibly cooler in winter which may help. The beans I remember from the UK I think are the scarlet runner bean.

Some more oddities excluding cherry tomatoes (which pop up everywhere by themselves and get no care at all) from the garden.

At back is a perfectly round Richmond River Green cucumber. The single yellow tomato at front is a Garden Peach tomato. Both heirloom varieties:

Our first miniature rock melons (Hearts of Gold) for the season. They’re very heavy for their size:

Not the usual thing one finds in the garden but we have a new friend. A large 2m or so python resting after a meal. She’s a bit shy and hid her head and top half as I was trying to take a photo from a foot or so away:

A young possum I think. All the local birdlife were harassing the poor python and pecking it.

A number of the birds are nesting at the moment so more protective of their young. Bloody hell of a racket they’re making. That’s how we found the snake.

Yep, we all love our LICs here. End result is “Living Incredibly Comfortably”:). That is, excluding an occasional bit of indigestion from overindulging:cool:.
