You're kidding right? People have been living in caravans in this country for as long as I can remember.... this is merely a fancier main stream version. So, it caught on many decades ago.

I see the appeal for many & when you really think about it, it makes financial sense.

I looked into this when I was in Atlanta, zoning etc on land to set up a tiny house.
I also think you can not finance these unless its over 400 sq ft?? still doing some research on this. Also can only set up in down town/mid town certain precincts.

Tiny house movement is a different beast to trailer/RC, caravan concept IMO

Imagine major cities littered with trailers, caravans, RC set ups.... I don't think so

In reality, they are just glorified caravans. Many people have been living permanently in caravans for decades. Hardly a new concept.

Certainly so much better looking aesthetically, but also much more expensive.

    Agree
But this is a different generation, primary reason is environment and not necessarily about what they can afford
Also we are talking of a concept where you can park/reside in a city location, not so with a caravan, trailer, RC

There's been a show on channel 9 Life about these for as long as I can remember. We sometimes catch it just because its before or after a renovation show we watch. There's one about people finding established tiny homes to match their taste / criteria and another where they build them new from scratch.

I don't get why ya would. Its really just a glorified trailer. Especially the ones that have kids or pets.

There's actually quite a few threads on this already if you had searched, Tiny house living and mortgage free - Is it worth it? from a few days ago for example.

Video above explains why Tiny House works for her/single couple. Big one was saving money.
Perhaps this works better in US, not so in Australia??

Personally i find them very depressing. Dont know if they will become popular in Oz but I someone doubt it.

Friends live in a caravan with their two kids - by choice - so they have money to travel and expose their kids to experiences. I think "good on them" but never for me. Living for 6 months in an 8x8 garage, even if it was pretty well decked out, was more than enough for me with kids and multiple large pets.

I agree, tiny houses are just flashed up caravans and, although I understand the why, I would rather buy a cheaper renovators delight and renovate than have to pack my bed away to get my kitchen out - or sit on the toilet while taking a shower.

Spoke with a recently retired couple yesterday who sold up their PPOR in Sydney just on 9 months ago and purchased a new caravan to travel. They have no desire to ever own a home again. They also said that the traffic in Sydney is horrendous and that they won't be rushing back there anytime soon. Is this a sign of the times? They are obviously reasonably cashed up.

Trailer homes or mobile homes are far more prevalent in the US than in Oz. I've only been to about 30 of the continental States but they all seem to have many a mobile home. Definitely not as common here.

    This is not uncommon.

Friends who caravan report regularly meeting people who have done the same thing.

Some people are so clever, they actually live without a house altogether. More popular in the US for sure, but steadily rising in Australia. Imagine no rates, no water bills, no electricity bills, no rego! The Australian government even pays you for this! Sounds like a life of little expense and luxury!
