    Me too..but I don't think fund @Nodrog would be happy to invest exists in real but only on paper. I am talking about the graph from Peter Thornhill showing growth in dividends and capital by investing in all industrial fund. WHF comes close but the data shown in Thornhill's graph is definitely not from WHF. Wish there was a fund that allowed investors to mimic results of the graph.

    @Nodrog have you ever asked Peter what would the compounded annual returns be of the all industrial share graph?

    Cheers,
    Oracle.

    A globally diversified portfolio:
    ... with an element of home bias;
    ... offering market returns;
    ... in as few funds as possible;
    ... with the lowest fee possible;
    ... from a reputable Mgr that’s been around a long time.

    If one wants to be involved in the process somewhat then VAS and VGS meet that criteria first and foremost. However whether due to nostalgia / unneeded Mgr diversification or the excuse of income smoothing one or two older style LICs still have a home in our portfolio.

    If fiddling, indecision, inability to stay the course, nervousness, bad behaviour etc (probably most) are in issue then one of Vanguard’s growth / high growth wholesale unlisted funds would be ideal. Open an account, setup a monthly BPay into the fund, forget about then focus your life on where you can really make a difference. For most that’s not trying to be an active investor.

    You need to address me properly as Sir Nodrog (not Nordogo_O) before I’ll answer the question:).

    Firstly do you know what your objectives are? Have you considered tax consequences, your risk tolerance, age, growth vs income etc. The usual financial planning considerations.

    I assume by your question you are more interested in the unlisted Managed Fund approach as opposed to buying on the sharemarket through a broker?

    If so one of these funds might be of interest to you. However Vanguard wholesale funds generally require a minimum $100k (not $500k as advertised) to get started. After that ongoing contributions through say BPay can be as little as $1k from what I’ve heard.

    @pippen would be able to add more on this as his partner invests in the wholesale funds.

    I note we’re getting off topic here also.

    @ross100 yeah my partner is in the vanguard wholesale funds both australian and international fund so individual asset classes with cash at bank buffer as bond/fixed interest fund!

    Opted for the individual funds as looking at past data as well as amit shows lots of returns via distributions as capital gains at wholesale level in growth and high growth fund and abit erratic distributions due to hedged international component on addition emerging markets only make up a small piece of allocation so best to do without it atm!

    She adds monthly to both funds via bpay, no attempt what so ever in market timing, down the track she may add global property or emrging markets but right now happy with pretty much 3 fund portfolio as its in her personal name as well and doesnt want lumpy less tax efficient capital gains handed back to her via distributions at her marginal tax rate, and in 25 years time she can withdraw units from whatever fund she choses instead of being in the growth fund where she would be selling off portions off all units in all funds to satisfy redemptions.

    Not perfect but she is happy with it and thats whats counts!

    You can't put a price on freedom and getting on with life even if it costs .05 to .10% more in fees per year yes they compound but add up the time staring at commsec and assess your character if you go down the etf route with 10k ready to deploy. If the market is humming along will you still drip feed or will you wait abit for some dip...... likewise when there is blood on the street will you buy in when your job is on the line and its all doom and gloom or will you wait for the upturn or even do the dreaded sell low and then buy in high again!

    Could go on for ages but know thyself is crucial!
