Yes, the women of Australia (through Independents) fired Jenny's husband from his job.

IMHO Labour hasn't had a resounding victory - the protest vote [against Morrison] resulted in votes going to the Independents and greens who have enjoyed their greatest success The next 3 years are going to be fascinating and the results of the next election will be the proof of the new order ... :)

Absolutely 100%. Really doesn't make much difference either way. All I really ask for is far right or far left parties not gain any power. Neither Labor nor libs fall into that, so we are good...
Australia is mostly a free market capitalist based democracy. Prices of most things such as house prices, groceries, IRs etc are all determined by larger supply and demand based macroeconomic forces which no government will F with and its very difficult for them to be effective even if they try to do so.
There is a very wise saying: dont wish it was easier- wish you were better. That's the individual forces you are referring to.

This is possibly the best outcome at the election for Australia as a country. People need to stop looking inwards to their property or investment portfolio which is incredibly insignificant to the direction this country should be taking with regards climate change. People in privileged positions with years of investment behind them wouldn't feel a thing. But the entire country gets to move ahead and implement strong climate action now and not pussyfoot around targets in the distant future that won't matter to career politicians who will be long dead then.

I was personally not too keen for a Labor majority as they were not going far or fast enough on climate. Getting the Greens and the community independents in would get them to act in a far better way. In 30 years I'd rather leave a habitable country with a world leading renewable industry providing incredible opportunity to my kids and grandkids than two investment properties or 500k in shares. Sow the seeds for a tree, not hand down two fruits that will rot with time.

The system in australia (independent, trusted electoral commission, almost universal voting, relatively little racial and social discrimination on voting) means that the fringe parties never dominate. Major parties have to trend towards the centre, because thats really where most voters are.

Smaller parties having balance of power is not the same as being able to drive policy, because the majority party has to look at reelection next time too. Even if you dont trust pollies, at least believe in their instinct for self preservation.

compared to many other countries including the US, our political system is an incredible gift, whatever you think of the details.

we just had a smooth democratic federal election that people think is fair. No disputes, no conspiracies, no protests, violent or peaceful. The ads were downright tame. Much of the world looks on in envy. The banality is what will make people want to come here.

Yesterday shows the foundations of that system have been shaken. It is to be seen if it is only a blip or is a fundamental change but I'll stick my neck out and say it's the end of the two party system. Studies of Western European social democracies show the entry of professional qualified or community based women in politics basically displaced older, career politicians white men and led to seismic and fundamental change in how politics works in those countries permanently. I see similar tones here.

How do you know that it is protest vote against Morrison? Have you considered that maybe these voters simply agree with these relevant independents policies?

Most Independents would have had to work their butts of and knocked door to door for months on end to advertise their policies and seems like people actually listened. Calling it a protest vote is simply taking away from their hard work.

I personally prefer for more independents and as an example, Rex Patrick for example. Probably the most decent politician out there , an actual Public servant.

This is why I think this time is different and hopefully the beginning of true representation in politics. A lot of the winners this time around have built grassroots movements in the community. Rex Patrick is a good example. The ABC ran a segment on how Cathy McGowan coached and trained the teal women despite her retirement, and how much they respect her for being a lone independent in a parliament with career politicians. Helen Haines is widely acclaimed across all sides of politics for her integrity and representing the needs of Indi. Nurse, midwife, and now a doctorate in epidemiology. Who can doubt that she doesn't work her butt off.

Max Chandler-Mather for the Greens in Griffith, and the SE QLD Greens in general in state, local and federal politics over the last 3 years have knocked every door in that area multiple times. I've read Max won not because of floods and climate change alone but the very local issue of aircraft noise which none of the majors cared about. That dispels the notion that the Greens are only a tree hugging party, and are flexible enough to work on local issues. Bandt himself admitted that the party has shifted its opinion on coal to listening to coal workers and helping find solutions for it rather than bulldozing through their agenda.

Compare these to the likes of Tim Wilson, who only ever held a job at the partisan think tank IPA, or Kristina Kenneally who has only really ever failed upwards. Or even folks like Bob Katter coasting on his father's legacy. We need to remove these people and replace them with our neighbours, colleagues and friends who are accomplished in society and want to improve it. Stop voting blue or red no matter who and open our minds.

Interesting that Jenny wore a teal dress for Scott's concession speech - designed by Carla Zampatta, mother of successful teal candidate for Wentworth, Allegra Spender
