I'm not much into cars, but my sister recently replaced her 20 yr old Hyundai excel (bought new) with a new Hyundai Accent. I know, not the coolest car. But damn cheap and for the money, I thought pretty good.

20 years on she paid exactly what she paid 20 years ago except the new model now has (which the 20 yr old didn't):
    power windows
    air bags
    ABS
    anti-burnout thingie
    phone hook up thingie
central locking. doors lock automatically once you're driving
    A/C
    power mirrors
    God knows what else.

Same price, more car, 20 years on. It seems a lot less flimsy too.

Will she get an electric, driverless car for the same money when she replaces this one in 20 yrs?

I bought a brand new entry level Mazda 3 (Neo) in 2013. It cost me 20k. And it has been legendary. I've fit a queen mattress in it and also, seperately, a queen bed. I hate new car shopping so it will be at least another 3 years before I look to upgrade to something newer/more efficient. It's a good balance between space to move stuff with and fuel efficiency.

^^ I mentioned Alfas earlier. My ideal weekender is an early 80's Alfa Alfetta GTV6

Drove it up Mt Gravatt today.

Plus, someone said, "Cool car!", and asked, "Does it come with free STDs?"

Here is Emma's bum, quite a good looking one if you ask me ;)

Car manufacturers in my opinion have finally gotten styling right, even some of the traditionally "steer clear" manufacturers are putting out amazing quality and amazing looking vehicles (ie Kia who are of course now owned by Hyundai). It used to be that everyday cars looked everyday and things like Merc's and Audi's looked a cut above.

Not anymore, most brands are now putting out really really nice cars for sub $50K.

This one is cool, but certainly not cheap.

That car has a few thingies but no thingamajigs. Also no whatchamacallits. Maybe the next model will have them.

There aren't many of those around nowadays, they all rusted in the guards/wheel arches after two or three years.

Surprised it took this long for someone to mention an MX5. That would be one of my dream "daily fun" cars. Along with an old Mini Cooper.

Someone I know had a GTV (only the 2.0) and yes, it was full of rust. Guards, boot, underside of the doors. It was a disaster. Sad, because they were beautiful to look at for their time and the V6 was a beauty of a sounding engine.
