    It's good because some workplace URL filters would only pick up the http version ;)

    It basically makes the website more secure and encrypts your data. The usual website format for most sites you visit is http://www.propertychat but now it is https://www.propertychat . The 's' is for secure and shows that there is a layer of encryption. You'll see that information sensitive sites such as PayPal, banks, Gov websites etc all use HTTPS. Ideally it should be used for every site.

    You can use a tool called HTTPS Everywhere to enable it on sites where supported and increase your online security.

    Yup, with spdy and good quality SSL certs available for a reasonable price now - there really is no excuse for not doing SSL for everything.

    Will probably upgrade to an EV cert next year so I can get a nice green browser address bar.
