It's in a tree in the backyard of my rental (see picture).

Do I need to cut the tree down? Anyone else have experience to share?

I'd definitely be looking at numerous baits !
    That's a huge nest.
I'd be more worried about where they are going to dine.........
While the tree is alive it should be ok, but judging by the size this may be the perfect excuse to remove it.
    What area ?

Looks like a nice, mature tree.

Just get a termite company in to advise re. treatment. And maybe an arbourist to assess the tree for safety.

I would have the house inspected too.

Being that close to the property ,i would be more worried that the nest is inside the property because they like to travel ,or the fork in the tree splits..Maybe have someone check the house first then work on the tree..imho..

Nah. They're arboreal-termites, they won't damage the tree that they're occupying but will attack rotting timber or timber in contact with the ground eg fences.
