How many need help though. Could be 9000 vs 7650.

Would likely take some time like it did for your nephew.

Iā€™d say about 2/3 to 3/4, maybe even more, are of working age in both countries. Those that need assistance would correlate similarly with the numbers of Australians requiring assistance at the moment.

We've also got well over 5x the population so it's not that unevenly distributed.

Backpackers have contributed to Australia by paying taxes, renting camper vans.

Overseas students have contributed dough to our unis and cramped themselves in tiny apartments.

Look, it's a tough one. Yeah, let 'em stay

All fair points, and I don't think anyone said they couldn't stay, just that in this crisis, they need to obey the laws/rules like anyone else.

Pretty sure anyone who wants to fork over his own money to help keep a few backpackers/overseas students in this country can do so with no problem at all. But if someone with a vested interest in keeping them here lobby the gov to use taxpayer dollars to foot the bill, then a lot of people are going to have a problem with that.

I think if we are going to allow NZ citizens the right to live in Australia long term where they pay taxes and otherwise contribute to our society, then it's only fair that we give them temporary access to welfare in this situation, given that they can't access other centrelink benefits (is it something like they have to have been resident in Australia for a minimum of 10 years before they can access? I'm not sure).

Unlike students and other temporary visa holders who are here for a relatively short term for a specific purpose before they return home, these are people who have migrated to Australia for the long term, under agreements we have with New Zealand. I think it's only reasonable to offer them some form of short term assistance.
