Geee , you guys are having to spend some time trolling though the archives to get negative articles about tassie . That one's four years out of date...

    Having said that ...

Living in Sydneys north with kids playing in the local sporting comps , we've occasionally had contact with Brooklyn which historically has been a hub of Sydney's Oyster farmers and there are a few people up there who are " a bit different "

Some of the Tasmanian tenants we've met are also a bit " different " , But like some of our Goodna tenants, they have a reliable employer who never fires them and pays their rent on time all the time .

    It was on 2GB yesterday.
    I juat couldn't find the article/transcript.

Has Tasmania changed from 2 years ago? For years government hindered business community closing operations.

The logging and paperwork industry disappeared.

So is Tasmania just growing due to being cheap?

If employment is poor business conditions poor, State is technically on welfare both at state level and citizen level.

    What else is driving Tassie?

I dont see how an increase in population - on its own - means an improvement in an economy.
What if all those thousands of extra people are unable to find permanent and adequate employment to support them?
All you will have done is add to the welfare burden that their State already has to shoulder.

You say this after only a weekend there, LOL. Have you stayed there for two decades like I have? :)

Like I said previously, there enough to do to keep you happy for a couple of months - but afterwards there's not much else.

What about hobbies outside of work? I was referring to things to do - lifestyle.....sports, outdoor, eating, climbing, travelling, walks, bike rides, diving, brunches, camping, fishing and so on...loads of things to do. They even have AFL and Internat.onal cricket there to name a few....I've been to Tassie 3 times..two separate weekends and one other trip for 2 weeks. Its not a place that people who crave mega-city life would necessarily like, because their Cities are a lot more low-key than the Mainland generally, and I suspect job opportunities are more limited than the main Cities, but as far as activities...plenty if you look.
It's sorta like the local who talks to a tourist...the tourist goes to places the locals never bother to go to, and has been to places the locals have never heard of.

I would think Tasmania has more nature outdoor stuff to do if u are into that, if it's not freezing. . For younger generation, big cities like Melbourne, sydney probably have a more vibrant night life and entertainment scene.

To their credit, Tasmania probably has the best internet NBN which is all you really need if u are a younger generation computer nerd/gaming type of person.

@Pentanol instead of whinging and complaining, if you had bought in your hometown a year and a half ago you would have had at least 20%CG. If you have another year of this boom, who cares if there's enough entertainment there or things to do etc.

yeah; the night life might be the deal breaker...although; we don't need nightclubs - our two nights were nice restaurants with even nicer Tassie wines...I noticed there were a few pubs with some activity in Launceston as we were walking around on both nights (Fri and Sat), and we were told there are a few night clubs there too, but didn't spot any in our travels...don't forget; they have a Casino!!
Maybe a Tassie version of a "night club" is the front bar of the pub? :D

As someone who was born here, do you really think I don't actually have a property there? I'm already made a few hundred ks with my interests there. This doesn't mean I can't be objective on what living there is like. Being there for "just a weekend" does not make you an expert on Tassie. How about get a clue before you voice your opinion @AndyPandy?

Those hobbies you mentioned can be done in other states. Tassie is not really the place you want to be if you want do sports, have you heard of any decent athlete from there? My team won many top tier indoor soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, Tennis and Badminton finals while I was there. I don't even need to mention international cricket or AFL for people to know that it's a very infrequent event. Tassie isn't really the place to be if you want some decent competitors. Wine tours - you can get that in Orange. Lol eating and brunches, you can get much better in Melbourne and Sydney and cheaper as well! I'm a foodie and I've blogged a fair bit on Tassie, Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney cafes and restaurants. Fishing? If I want to spend a whole day fishing and not getting anything, I'll take my single friends to the club and spectate that! Much more funny and entertaining! I do admit that if you do like the scenic stuff, time would pass more quickly for you than someone who is not into that. Even if you're into it, the weather puts you off much of the year. I used to go walking a fair bit with friends as there was nothing better to do other than going to the gym. Never understood the appeal of Casinos, always strike me as a place for old people with nothing better to do than to willingly give money to the machines. My parents went everyday.

My main concern with Tassie is that the current vacancies (and for the past year) have had a very low ratio of jobs (less than 30%) with over $60k (as per seek) even with the boom. This explains the low vacancy rates and also means that Tassie will have a smaller cap on property price. I mean sure, you might make a $100k (more if you got in earlier) which is nothing to sneeze at but that's about it. Economically I see very little reason for the boom other than a cashed up interstate led boom due to the low vacancies and improvement in tourism industry but little improvement in household wages and advertised wages. Also interstate and international migration is still low.

QUOTE="Ed Barton, post: 548647, member: 319"]I wonder how that compares to the rest of Australia?

A good amount who post hear have pore literacy. Some seem to have English as a second language so that's understable. Their's typos and slang which youse get when righting informally. But they're seams to be a lot who have a very poor grasp of English.[/QUOTE]
    LOL!

Yes, because there have been so much analysis done behind Tassie's growth

Other than seeing 5 x Tassie ramping threads from Cliff, I've yet to see anything sustainable or substantial behind the growth.
