Sorry, didnt want to start a new lifestyle thread, so I put it here,

a friend of mine is looking to start a little business,

he needs to take these kinds of photos of wine bottles and their boxes

however one random guy quoted something stupid like $500 for 10 photos

surely it cant be that hard to take photos like this?
is it a case of camera or lighting?

can he get some photography enthusiast to come over take a few pics for $50

sorry, this is coming from someone who cant even take a selfie on a phone camera without looking like the girl from the ring

Yes hard to do. Editing each shot etc. $500 seems a fair price if you are potentially using these photos to sell millions of dollars in products. People find it hard to understand that professional photography is based a lot on end use, longevity, markets, copy-write, as opposed to personal photography.

Go for the $50 dollar photos if you wish but don't be surprised if they are a bit off your expectations.

    Touristy nailed it.

Perhaps look at it this way, people pay near $10k for BA. One may think, how hard is it to go find a house to buy, there's heaps of them out there ;) , surely some bloke on Gumtree could do it for a fiver? While not everyone would use a BA there are people that see and leverage value from their services, just like a professional quality photographer.

Only you can decide if the product you want to use these services for is worth the outlay. If the photographs use is important to ones product/marketing then getting this right is a no brainier. Think of it as leveraging a $500 bucks into how much?

do some lurking on instagram and get tips from the there.

if you want those shots you'll need a pro, but if you can get away with trendy phone photos (or get an SLR) you may be able to DIY

Current smart phones take Decent photos including high dynamic range (automatically balances bright and dark areas). Get a wide angle clip on lens for your phone- comes in handy in making small spaces appear larger like laundries, bathrooms.

Camera and lighting. Here is an example of the equipment you need for these types of shots:

Photo Shooting Table Soft Box Lighting Set 60cm x 130cm

Nikon 791450 D7200 Single Lens Kit (18-55mm) at The Good Guys

and also a macro lense, which I won't link to as I have no idea which one you would need. I am not even sure that camera is the right kind.

Other options: follow up with other product photography providers such as Sydney Product photography Studio and Content Services

I've got about 10k worth of camera gear.... And I still pay for a pro photographer to take photos of my new property for sale.

I think it's a case of you only get what you pay for.....if budget is truly tight you could try Snappr.
