Sure Sydney is an international city. Unfortunately with 5 million people sharing old and aging infrastructure made for 2million+ people it is becoming too crowded too fast. One stark and painful example is Parramatta road which has becoming a virtual carpark most of the time now and the quality of that main arterial road is just a disgrace to Sydney (germans would be laughing their asses of when they drive on it)

Hope Brissy doesn't grow too quickly. them foreigners can just go invest in Sydney/Melbs all they like and spoil those cities.

p.S. I was gonna go on about how living in sydney is slowly becoming like living in China. There's probably more people born in China living there than those born in UK now. But I think that is way off topic here :D

Goulburn is more of an international city than Beijing or Shanghai. At least when i go there i dont have to use a squat toilet.

Then I'm afraid Tokyo takes the cup for THE International City. Toilets that can lock onto and shoot water at your starfish.

I am amazed that the city of Frankston didn't make the Alpha++ list!!

Maybe it's the first to achieve Alpha +++ status?.....

    back to topic.

Agents and auctioneers sound warning ahead of big spring auction day

Sydney's real estate agents and auctioneers are calling on vendors to set realistic reserve prices in the lead-up to the biggest auction day so far this spring.

About 1000 homes are expected to go under the hammer this weekend on the first “super” Saturday. But some fear a bloodbath since auction clearance rates have plummeted from near 90 per cent four months ago to 71.3 per cent on Saturday.

“It’s the weakest spring market for three years,” Domain Group senior economist Dr Andrew Wilson said.

“Parts of the city are showing signs of fatigue.”

Auction volumes are up almost 50 per cent this September, with almost 2500 homes going under the hammer so far this month. Auction numbers were also well up over July and August, with 800 auctions most Saturdays – unheard of for winter.

But the high volumes are now taking their toll. The north-west of the city has gone from one of the best-performing regions to one of the weakest. On Saturday, just 54.3 per cent of homes up for auction sold.

Quite refreshing, first time hearing Andrew Wilson being so bearish.

Don't knock squat toilets. They are much more hygenic than western toilets and better for constipation. Not so good for reading the paper though :D

The key to living in Sydney is staying in the right suburbs with the "preferred" demographics. That means paying a premium for locations where there the people are "whiter" (I suspect there's a flavour of xenophobia in your comment though).

Labor neglected Sydney's infrastructure since the Olympics -- but thanks to the new government we are building Australia's largest infrastructure projects at the moment which puts a fire under the economy and allows NSW to carry the national growth story while the mining bust is taking place.

Obviously you haven't been to Sydney's Blue Ribbon suburbs and how different they are from your notion of spoiled lifestyle ;)

The las time I was in Brisbane the Italian and Chinese restaurants have poor taste, the best chips in town are made by McDonalds.

Sure Sydney can be a victim of its own success, but if you know where to place yourself* in this world city you can enjoy unspoilt lifestyle and take advantage of the culture it brings.

*Means avoiding those "spoilt" locations you have been exposed to

Australia is an amazing place. From some of the best country towns to breathtaking natural scenery. The diversity of foods, cultures, people and choices for almost anything is staggering. And many of the folks here are down to earth and genuine. Australia is an amazing country.

Even more amazing if your financially wealthy.

Tokyo has over 13 million, London and New York close to 9 million. Sydney is way behind on your criteria

    I agree @Waterboy.

Some years ago I was listening to someone talk about how we have to create our own lifestyle of happiness and exceptionality. It doesn't just happen, regardless of where you live. It's a conscious choice, to create your own lifestyle and special way of living, regardless of where you are. Gold advice I found.
