Fair enough! Very new to Sydney.
Ps. I like Alexandria. My cousin just bought there a few months ago and I'd buy there too. Long term, its a great area. Easy walk to Redfern station, near the new CBA campus (10,000 jobs).... I'd possibly go for an old style terrace home in the area over a new property though, but we all have different tastes.

Yep.....and depending on how many interest only periods you have....but on a $1m...the repayments could easily double or more......after 15 years interest only.....will get really interesting in Sydney

Any reason why it seems a fair bit cheaper than some other areas surrounding? Pricing at the $1.5M seems to get you something decent there.

Surrey Hills and Redfern are considered trendy and hip and have boomed already. Alexandria is preceived as not as close to the city, a bit more industrial perhaps and away from the action. But I would buy there as it's not far from Redfern at all, and Redfern is very nearly as good as Central in terms of train services.

Alexandria (and that general area) may get more units being built in the vicinity, but if you buy a townhouse or terrace you get the land under your property. This is a rare commodity.

Throw in 10k of CBA employees moving in in 2019, and it will be a very popular area, easy stroll to the high tech CBA campus at ATP.
Sydney is going to keep expanding southwards.. (Google "Central to Eveleigh")... this expansion won't be overnight, but Alexandria is comfortably placed right in that area to take advantage of the city expansion.

Edit: nearly forgot.... metro rail running through Waterloo too.... Alexandria is well placed to go pretty much everywhere.

@Jello_B $1k is a massive amount of money for a 2 bedroom place in that area in my opinion. You Can easily get something nice under $650 a week in Neutral bay. Same vicinity and save an extra $350 towards your future house!

Another OTT example following on from @Propertunity 's example...... This house in Beecroft 18 Welham Street, Beecroft, NSW 2119 - Property Details (again another suburb with limited stock) had initial price guide of $1.8-1.9m then revised up to $2m. Our estimation $2.1-2.2m. Sold a whopping $2.65m and $650K over $2,050,000 reserve. Epic result given it's only on 884sqm and isn't a character home. New owner intends knocking it down.

I bet owner is Chinese ...Welham Street has a back street short cut to Beecroft School , its OC class reputedly the top 1 or top 2 in the state...every year the students in that school (OC or not) score many private school scholarships Knox, Barker, Kings etc...many end up in medical schools too!

There, this should send some people here into a frenzy!

I second this! You could also get something nice in Woollahra or Paddington for less than or around $650 p.w. meaning 15 minute commute to the city. Plenty of options also :)

@Jello_B i moved to Sydney from Perth about 10 years ago- it's hard to learn all the good places. PM me if you want some good tips on places to live (assuming you aren't locked into Mosman)

Alexandria has a lot going for it - as Gockie mentioned, but personally I find the traffic too heavy for my liking, especially at peak hour and on weekends (when most people jump in the car to go out to socialise, shop etc). It bothered a friend of mine a lot to the point where she didn't even feel inclined to go out on weekends!

Coming from Perth you might find it annoying too. It really depends on your lifestyle. If you will walk a lot, maybe not such an issue.

Another vote here for perhaps find somewhere cheaper to rent while you do your research. I came from Perth 15 years ago and found the rents here ridiculous at the time. Do you need to be near the city/ public transport etc?

Yes, well when your missus is moving from Perth away from her family to be in Sydney for my work and she says she wants to live in Mosman, you live in Mosman :)

I'm a driver mate, never caught public transport in Perth. Drive to work currently but I'm on the road before 6am so miss the morning traffic. Not getting home until 7ish so not to bad on way out either.
What about Annandale, that looks better priced as well?

I don't know about the prices of Annandale, as haven't been following it. But I am not sure its better priced. Take a look at
