youve left out the most important thing: WHY do they desperately want to come back to Sydney? Because of family in Sydney? Because there's something they can't get in Qld? One example doesn't mean anything.

I did. Moved from Brisbane to Melbourne. Working in IT, there are more jobs with higher pay, living costs similar, more places for smashed avo's, shops that don't close at 5pm on the dot.

But these things matter to me as a millennial early in my career.

Agreed that Sydney and Mel are the kings of 20 dollar smashed avo and 5$ coffees.
Brisbane and gc are also increasing in this though. By the end of the year, there will be quite a few more smashed avo places in Brisbane.

nothing new, there will always be people selling up and moving interstate.

The way the AUD is going down, tourism is likely to pick up and benefit the GC as well.

But if you are hoping for a boom, in the near term the place to be is Melbourne.

And talking about history repeating, we haven't had a nice big recession for quite a while now, **** might just hit the fan in 2018 if not later half of this year.

So many families are doing this! most of the time they do it because they are scared of tenants trashing their house! Expensive trip of a lifetime! !

If I was going to try living in Brisbane or the GC (even indefinitely), I'd keep my Syd PPOR and rent in QLD. Once you sell, you'll never get back in.

Yeah I just read about some talk of doing a mining levy on bhp and tinto as advanced payment to help with the debt WA has of $30billion. Sheesh did the eastern states or Canberra siphon all the moolah from WA the past few years when mining was booming over there?

WA should be like a wealthy state with their own state wealth fund or something by now...

i would think that Its jobs that move people and everything else is secondary? Sydney is the financial hub so more of those and Melbourne is the IT hub so more of that. Unis introduce foreigners to these cities and they like to stick around as they start establishing themselves. A house price would not be a factor for me to move personally cz of my industry. Plus both these are way more diverse then QLD which is an added attraction.

Siphoning is a bit of a harsh description given all the eastern states carried WA for many years prior to the boom, where they were equally whinging that WA wasn't paying it's way...

You've nailed it Wally. But the two states are just so wildly apart they may slowly start to converge just a little IMO. Whether that's Qld slowly lifting off the floor or NSW descending from the peak who knows. Perhaps a little of both. There are better days ahead for Qld coal if Anna P can stare down her own party and the greens, plus great potential for the new minerals province in the far west, but gosh its hard to get things going in this state - there are very few drivers. Very frustrating. Where's that Bradfield Scheme when you need it!
And employment has been mentioned many times as an issue in Brisbane. ie top flight CFO positions are all getting 80-100+ quality applicants, so a lot of Brissie talent is either going interstate or o/s to find jobs, or staying home to fill far lesser roles. I don't reckon that was the case even 5 or 10 years ago. Only upside to this is that medium sized companies have plenty to choose from in a range of trades and professions, and less staff churn for them.
