Contemplating supercharging my 86 to give it a little more oompf.

Any suggestions as to where I can go?
Not after a place that aims to get the highest kw number, I want something that is stable and safe, but at the same time just a little more fun to drive.

    @Colin Rice - You've got an 86 right?

Any reason why supercharge over turbo?

And they make a nice whine :)
Plus I'd assume for city/road driving, the lack of lag would make an already sprightly car even more sprightly...

The Subie bottom end in your motor lends itself really nicely to a Turbo. Supercharging never really gives the oomph people expect, you can get a turbo situated pretty close to your manifold so it kicks in early, the one in my Liberty was 1 bar (14psi) of boost and it kicked in at 2,600. 14psi is good for around 100kw increase (although make sure you talk to your tuner before deciding on the amount of boost).

As for the whine, that's just the Gilmer belt drive squishing air out the sides of the teeth in the belt as it spins through the cog, you can do that without a supercharger :). The toyotas are really revvy, not good with an SC which runs out of puff :).

Go down the SC road if you want but it will cost more than a turbo setup and the results will be less than a turbo.

My bro is an engineer for Subaru.
There is a reason they weren't turbo'd. I forget what it was, but think it was something to do with compression already being high. I'll have to ask him.

If you do go down this path though, go turbo, not super.
Super still has 'lag' as its taking ~25% of the engine power already just by running the belt. The super 'whine' will look ridiculous on an 86. Get a dog box instead :p

A well done tune can reduce lag tremendously.

I had a very well modded and tuned 2007 wrx.
Stock, the tiny turbo (TD04L) kicked in at 4200. I added a few things; VF34 turbo, turbo back exhaust, silicon intake, removed resonator, STi intercooler and a bloody good tune.. turbo kicked in at 2800 and was full boost (18psi) before 3200. Was epic. Was bloody quick to 100km/h (which is all you want for a street car).

Do your homework before you spend a cent. Do it once, do it properly.
I'll see what info i can get out of my brother (and what differences mechanically are between the 86 and BRZ that could come in handy when choosing your path).

But most importantly.. if you're a dick of a driver, don't do it at all.

I always thought the Supercharger setup was simpler and cheaper ~ $7-10k installed/tuned and cheaper maintenance?

Turbo would cost more initially as well as ongoing maintenance?

    Tunehouse in Syd are good.
MRT has good info but I don't like Brett, he's a knob and a salesman, will tell you anything you want to hear to get your cash. Turbo will give you more power overall and more torque throughout, supercharging will give you more torque up top.
Ruff guess, bout 10k either way you do choose.

Shop around.. and get good quality parts. No cheap stuff off ebay.

    Turbo ~$1300
Turbo back exhaust ~$1300-2200 depending on brand
    Silicon intake ~$130
    Pipework ~$500
Intercooler $300-1300 (dependant on what type, used/new etc)
Tune $800-1200 (do NOT go ecutek for ECU (if required) - tunes are expensive and password locked to whoever did the tune).

Likely need other things too like injectors, fuel pump, new airbox (if it doesnt fit around new pupework - possibly cold air intake).

Another handy hint. Avoid MRT in Rhodes like the plague.

    Right now it is.
Not really interested in lowering it and having to worry about speed humps.
I just want the car to launch faster :)
Would prefer a car to look stock, but be faster as opposed to looking faster but stock under the hood.

    @mikey7 @Barny
Any place where I can get the shop to supply, fit and tune the entire kit?
Last thing i want is getting parts that don't work well together.

How do you live with the wheel gap though...
Speed hump are there for a reason, you won't have a problem.

Join a Subaru or BRZ forum and you'll soon hear who the quality fit and tune shops are in your state. 86Forums.com.au
Garret brand is usually the go to for turbos.

Always look stock and stay away from the shopping list of stickers on the car. Sleeper cars get pulled over WAY less than wannabe ricers
