It's been suggested on a few occasions that I run for Local Govt with the City of Joondalup. Nominations open next week and I've thought about it - but was hoping there might be a few peeps on here that could provide a heads-up with what to expect with becoming a Councillor. Anyone? Cheers.
I have a friend who's a councillor in Melville. It seems to be something that takes up a lot of after-hours time, and you get a small allowance ($10k-ish?) for your efforts. It also seems quite political. Can be a lot of nastiness and negativity going around, from pretty much all directions (other councillors, ratepayers, council workers etc). Still, I've thought about having a shot at it myself at times.
Look at potential conflict of interest. How can you make representations to council staff on begalf of a client if you are a councillor without a perception of conflict. If you have a genuine interest in improving the local area you might be able to be more effective as a private citizen on progress association etc and you can focus on what really interests you. Bear in mind that probably 90-95% of the budget is already committed for following years. I had a friend who was frustrated because of this and only lasted one term on his council
10k!! Really? Around my neck of the woods they get paid roughly in line with State politicians. Though it is a very big regional council. I know a coup,e of them and they work enormous hours for what I consider to be very little financial reward. Edit: I just checked the mayor gets over 200k and the councillor gets approx 135k and they both work crazy unsociable hours.
Ensure you get Sim to delete all your SS and PC posts before lest they bite you in the bum down the track
I've got mate who's a Councillor at Lake Mac. He's ALP but a good guy. He's very approachable and good to chat with. Happy to pass on his details if you want.
