Heard from someone that was looking to buy a subway that they (subway management in WA) strongly recommended that they worked in the business rather than from afar. They want the owners in the stores most of the time.

Just i was speaking to the cleaner at a shopping mall recently, an old guy 63yo beard who used own a Subway franchise and apparently they told him he had to work the back chopping veggies not out the front.

If a business is the bane of your life it's a **** business regardless of it's profitability

For a lot less than $300k you could start your own DarlingSubs.

Inner city location, basic retro fit, organic foods, barista coffee.

Franchise it as a hip premium alternative to Subway. A bit like the Grill'd with their burgers or Crust Pizza.

    I'm hungry already.

    @geoffw

I always thought your tale of the employee who rang in sick, then commented on the facebook that he had faked the sickie and proceeded to bag you - all the time forgetting he had "befriended" you on Facebook was hilarious.

If you read Geoff's accounts, I think he was forced to because of all the "no-shows" for their shifts.

If your the owner you want to be on counter! The amount of food swaps we do with them is insane. Plus keep an eye on all those pesky school kids who buy a cup and sit there for 3hrs refilling it

Yep, they're trying to promote their product as being healthy and it doesn't give that image otherwise.

Can't do much about one's age, but the rest of the requirements are in your control.

One of my close mates bought a subway franchisee in country Vic 2 years ago. Bought for $350K with a sale of $9500/week. They have since pushed the sales up a little and the average is around $10500/week now. This was in partnership with his brother and recently they have bought another one in another town close by with a sale of around $12000/week for around $450K.
He always tells me the business is doing good. I assume it is, given that they have bought another one in 2 years time. And yes it is true they both pretty much work 6-7 days around 12-14 hours everyday. I have asked him about this and what he always tells me is that he doesn't mind working those long hours as it is for his own business and not for some company that employs him.

Seems like really low sales based on purchase price.
    Costs would be relatively high.

Food businesses are always tough especially for franchises.

I've seen some in shopping centre food courts that pay $70K a year in rent. I'd be interested to see if they make a wage, let alone a profit.

You look too orthodox to be let loose behind the counter.

That's very much dependant on the local area supervisors. I'm not exactly young, and they never objected to me serving. I did choose to cut my beard off though.

Of course the story from the cleaner is likely to be highly accurate.

I've seen plenty which pay more in the major centres.

I'm talking Adelaide though which probably has a third of the rent costs of Sydney :p
