I was just speaking to my architect, who has told me to build a granny flat to the rear side of one of my blocks. If I want to build a duplex/ subdivide in the future, I would be able to do so as the granny flat would remain on one half of the subdivision.

Currently the property is zoned R2 (Campbeltown Council).

Does anyone know if this is true, as I thought that once a property had dual occupancy (house + granny flat) , it would be impossible to build a duplex up front later on.

I have heard that people are building a duplex now with granny flats at the back.. so probably what your architect is thinking that you build a granny flat now on one side and then when you come to subdivide the land the granny flat is already there.

you'll need to have it planned in advance I would say.. in terms of architectural plans for subdivision including the granny flat.

A granny flat is a secondary dwelling not a dual occupancy.
